Any optical drive currently available in the market will do you intended work and definitely won't cost anywhere even remotely close to billion dollars.. I'll suggest avoiding Sony though as they generally do not support all types of media.. Btw, do you need an internal drive or external.? I'll recommend going for Lite-On if you need an internal drive..
I had posted a similar query sometime before.. Sminlal and Malmenal helped me out immensely there.. Although I could not get the Asus drive (the one suggested above), I got hold of a Lite-On iHAS324.. Now I consider it one of the best purchases I ever made.. There are newer versions available.. Am still on the look out for that Asus drive though.. Partly because I need to keep two optical drives for my purpose..

ohh okay. i had a lite-on drive befor and it performs very well. i might choose to buy that brand again.
Lite-On, LG, Sony, Asus, are all fine DVD drives. Just go with price and availability. Verify Dual Layer capability. Most of them have it, but it doesn't hurt to verify.
