I have three optical drives, all of which were working fine until I installed DVD Decrypter today, after which all hell broke loose. The drives are as follows: Plextor PX-W4824A (CD burner), Samsung SD-816B (DVD-ROM), and NEC ND-3550A (DVD burner). I don't know what other details are crucial to an analysis of the problem, but I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed. I have Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6.x installed, which I haven't used in months. I also installed Nero 7 Premium today but didn't use it to burn anything.

Here's the story:
1) I end up trying to back up a DVD and get an error message from Any DVD saying there is a problem with the software or there is no burner installed. Reboots and reinstalls do not fix this error.
2) I realize that My Computer is not showing any of my three optical drives.
3) I check the BIOS and see that it does recognize the three drives, but I am still getting error code 19, meaning something is wrong with the registry.
4) I hunt around on the Net and find this page and follow the instructions to edit the registry.
5) I restart and (this may be unrelated) find that my computer is extremely slow because of a process that has taken over. I think it was wcuault.exe. I rename the files and restart, and that problem is solved.
6) Now that I can check my optical drives, I see that they are back! Unfortunately, I can't access them. I get the following error message:
"[D/E/F] is not accessible.
Incorrect function."

Some of the help I've read about includes a lot of people defaulting to this link.

However, I have not had Roxio version 5 on my HD since I reformatted last Spring, so I don't see how this article applies. I think there is still something wrong with the registry, and I don't know what or how to fix it. Then again, it could be something totally different.

Can anyone help? Let me know what information you need if you need any specific details.

Delete (one at a time rebooting) DVD Decrypter, Roxio, Nero 7.

After the third delete, shut down and disconnect the power from all three opticals. Reboot.

Hoping you have a Registry clean-up app (like Registry Fix), run a scan to get all the crap out that it finds.

Shut down; reconnect the 3 opticals and boot up. XP should rebuild the drivers for them.

Hope this works for you. By the way, you DO NOT want to install two cd burning apps together. Choose Roxio OR Nero. Avoid Decrypter like the plague.

My question is why bother with a CD burner and a DVD burner? I've never seen a DVD burner that didn't burn CD's....

My question is why bother with a CD burner and a DVD burner? I've never seen a DVD burner that didn't burn CD's....

I can think of a couple reasons why I have both burners and a DVD-ROM.

My CD burner burns CDs faster than my DVD burner.

You can leave a CD in the CD burner for frequent backups and still have another burner to use.

In case anyone neds to use this as a reference point, uninstalling DVD Decrypter and rebooting allowed me to finally access my DVD-ROM and CD burner. The DVD burner is still problematic and will fight the CD-R for the ability to "Enable CD Recording" under its properties, but at least I'm getting somewhere. Thanks for the advice on CD/DVD-burning software- I'm off to uninstall everything else.

One more question though: I've never used Registry Fix before, so how do I know what is the "crap" and what is something I shouldn't delete?

Just delete everything it finds. It will tell you that they are all problems. Nothing for you to think about.

Just make sure you register the product as soon as you install (you do that within the app itself); otherwise it doesn't scan everything. You will be given a serial # after you pay.
