have a headset for gaming that only accepts optical as a source, but my motherboard doesn't have an optical out port. any recommendations? new to this. mainly use the pc for gaming and general use.
Pretty sure you're going to need to add a sound card that includes an optical output.

i figured as much, but sound cards range from 15_20 all the way to 300+. it would literally only be used to connect my headset to my pc, for gaming. so im assuming that the cheapest option possible would work just fine? headset has a DAC so i dont believe i would need any sort of audio processing...especially for gaming
Question: Does your headset support 5.1? If so, then you likely need a soundcard that supports either Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect to support getting 5.1 audio out over Optical.
