Question Opticals Drives Don't Last?

I have optical drives consistently dying on me after 3 years. HP, LG, Pioneer, don't matter, and I don't use them heavily either, seem very unreliable. Your experiences? and if u have a home remedy, please share.

I've used the same Asus DVD/CD burner for years in a bunch of builds and have yet to have one fail. The one in my desktop was bought new in January 2011 with my 2600K. Last year I ripped my entire 450+ CD collection to FLAC to replace the mishmash of MP3 rips I'd done over the years previously. Drive still works fine and I probably rip about 5 CDs a month. This is just the standard $20 Asus SATA DVD/CD burner. Nothing fancy. At one time it had about 4.6/5 stars out of 2000+ reviews on Newegg.

I use external ones nowadays partly because the Internal ones didn't last long, whereas the external only gets plugged in when I need it, so isn't going through all the running up/down daily.
So far this seems to be extending the life.
