optimizing 9800 pro

After reading THG's article: "ATI's Optimized Texture Filtering Called Into Question ", I couldnt help but wonder how much I can optimize my graphics card. My system setup:
p4 3ghz 800mhz , 4x256mb corsair, asus p4p800 (mobo), and ofcourse ATI's radeon 9800 pro 128mb. According to my system's components, how would you advise me to adjust the default setting of my graphics card? I ussually play UT2004, and I would be happy to achieve better results for this type of game. Any suggestions are welcomed, thank you.

when i ask what can i optimize i mean, how much should i push the settings on the driver? I adjusted the Anisotropic Filtering from application preference to x16, and I definetly saw an amazing difference when comparing on UT4 - the mipmaps became so sharp and crisp! I also adjusted the anti-aliasing to x4/x6 instead of application preference and once again - great difference, all the lines on UT4 came out nice and sharp. The thing is, after about an hour of gameplay my screen turned blue :-| , and i had no choice but to reboot . so im guessing this is because it was quite a load to process, what settings should i go by in order to get higher quality but not get bluescreens or reboots? I ofcourse set all the other graphic detail levels on UT4 to the max. So all you pros out there, gimme a few tips on this one ;-). thanks

Adjusting those settings should <i>never</i> lead to crashes - they will make the card run slower simply because it is doing more work (although with a 9800Pro there are very few games where it will go too slow to play them at those settings).

If your PC crashes when not overclocked, you have a problem somewhere. As you say you play for a while and then it dies, I would say perhaps a heat issue.

Do you have any extra fans in your case? (besides the ones on cpu, power supply & graphics card)

Well, I live in Israel, its very hot over here, ussually no less than 30 degrees here, so my cpu for example is on a 40-42 degrees when relaxing . Ofcourse i have case fans, but i guess there is a limit to what wonders i can expect from them. how can i find out the temp of my radeon? and where is the red line in which the temp shouldnt go over?

lol, any easier way to know where my limit is? so ill know for example.. i need to get xtra cooling so my card ill be at least 5 degrees cooler.


is there a software that can tell me the vpu temp?
