hi, the current version of Windows 10 of my gaming pc (info on sig) is 19042.

today, saw that there is an optional update that will update Windows 10 on my gaming pc to 21H1.
this got me alarmed, because my backup pc (info on sig) updated to 21H1 and has been plagued by two serious problems...
problem 1 (resolved) thread for reference. https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/gpu-messed-up-by-unofficial-installer.3741554/.
problem 2 (under observation) thread for reference. https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/black-screen-after-windows-10-updates.3742166/

can I just choose to keep 19042, and ignore 21H1 permenently? Don't want these problems happening on my gaming pc as well.

Sig space specs can and will change over time, which is why we advise users to include specs in their thread's body, this help alleviate a thread ending up irrelevant when a solution is parsed for a sure in the same boat as you once were.

That being said, I'd advise on backing up any and/or all critical content on your platform in case the updates goes awry. You will need to gradually update to get to 21H2, unless you decide to recreate your bootable installer with Windows Media Creation Tools...with which you're getting 21H2 out of the gates but that means reinstalling your OS.

Also, I'm on 21H2 = 19044.1415 and outside of some random BSoD's which can be tied down to a failing motherboard(A10-6800K) or some wonky drivers windows got...
Not sure of complete details, but I think you will be forced onto a new major version at some point.......maybe every 6 months?

There's probably non-Microsoft software or registry hacks out there that supposedly give you more control, but I don't know how well it works.

I'm on 21H1 without problems.

As far as I know, you can delay ALL updates for a maximum of 35 days through "advanced options", which I do. Every 35 days, I take whatever they give me and then set a new delay for another 35 days. Right now, my time expires on January 4, so I'll submit to new updates in the next couple of days AFTER I make a new Macrium system image.

The 35 day maximum does not apply to the "H1" and "H2" major versions

I do the same as Lafong does....block/backup/unblock and update/block.
I go one extra step and block driver updates from winupd.
I get my drivers from the makers on my schedule.
I'm using 21h2 and have not seen a problem.

Bob:

I assume you block driver updates through Group Policy Editor?

I had the upgrade itch and recently updated to Win 10 Pro and so I now have GPE, but haven't used it at all.

As far as I can tell, GPE is about the only thing useful for me in Win 10 Pro, so I'm wondering what else you do with it?

I'm not a major proponent of fiddling with Windows, but maybe there's a thing or two in GPE that an ordinary user might want. I've got no interest at all in Bitlocker.

Do GPE alterations persist through major Windows Updates?

i have 2 desktops and 1 laptop and i have noticed the 21H1 updates do different things on each machine.
Sometimes they download straight away and sometimes they are optional.
On the ones that it is optional i will eventually be given it without asking for it anyway so i just ignore optional and let it happen.

Yes I block with gpe and also in the control panel.
Belt and suspenders.
I've looked through gpe.... a lot of options but not much that interested me.
I don't recall fiddling with much as my needs are pretty basic.

Do GPE alterations persist through major Windows Updates?
Don't know....never looked.
