Optiplex 740 capacitor leaking

Solution
Hi

Be prepared for failure to bootup and strange messages from BIOS and amber instead of green power led.
You might get by if only one capacitor out of several similar ones fail but usually after a time more will fail.

There are a small number of specialist companies who can fit new high quality capacitors

which is probably better than buying a replacement motherboard which will fail in a few more years

How old is this PC ? some Dell PC's have a 3 year warrantee most 1 year
the bad capacitor problem was supposed to be over by 2006

Agreed, there are some used mobos on the same site as well (19.95 I think). You can run until she drops. Just be sure to keep a backup of anything important stored on the system.

Good luck!

I think I don't haft to worry about the cap failing. When I was wiping some of the residue off the mother board the capacitor fail right off. Even with the capacitor gone every thing works perfect and still reliable as before.

I don't need to worry too much about backups as it's only used for games that only work on XP and their on cd.

Since the leads from the old capacitor are still attached to the motherboard, could I just get a capacitor thats the same and just solider it to the leads of the old capacitor, If I can solider a new one to the leads of the old one I think I could solider it without taking out the motherboard.

You could do that if you have the proper tools and parts, along with the patience and experience to do so. However, if one cap went bad, others will as well (most likely). You should consider the amount of time (and its value) in taking this on when you have other (less tedious) options.

But let there be no doubt, you can certainly replace a bad cap as suggested.
