I have the processor, just not the motherboard. I was wanting to buy the motherboard to use the processor with. Is there anyway i can check to see if its supported or if any of the bios updates for that motherboard will support it?
It is not just a matter of a BIOS update. The entire design of the motherboard must support the processor.
The Optiplex 745 was designed for the Pentium 4 processors and tested for the Core 2 Duo E6000 series. I cannot say with certainty that it will work with the E8400.
According to the above the E6000 series processors will work. All that means is that the motherboard was tested for those processors and does not mean that the E 8400 will not work; just that it was not tested.
If you already have the E8400 try it. At his point I do not see a PSU change being necessary.
