After a power glitch this OPTIPLEX 755 will start the boot and when selecting Normal or Safe mode will shut down. Did memory checks and all is OK. Removed HDD and was able to see all files via USB interface. Tried to install HDD in a different PC with no luck booting . Booting shows XP. Has 2G Ram. #4 rear LED OFF. Any help would be great.

Solution
I have never heard of a BIOS setting (ACHI instead of IDE) causing the PC to shut down after attempting to boot. But there's a chance the CMOS battery was not keeping the BIOS settings refreshed. That would explain the reset SATA mode.
I don't think so. I installed a HDD with Win 7 on it. It ran for about 10 minutes trying to "fix" the PC with the 7 internal diagnostics. After the 10n min period, it could not fix the "problem". When I run boot in safe mode it will load all the files and then shut down. It will also run for any length of time while in the Boot menu. I can try another Power supply just to make sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well it's fixed. To make a long troubleshooting fight short the problem was a setting in the BIOS. The HDD was set to ACHI instead of ATA. As soon as I made the change and re-booted the PC came up as normal. The only other "failed" part was the CMOS battery was only 2.6 Volts. I have replaced the battery and suggested the owner purchase a UPS to reduce the power problems.
Thanks to all for the suggestions
