Hello everyone.
I have recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 760 SFF.
My issue is the following. I replaced the CPU, upgrading from Core 2duo to Xeon X3363, working flawlessly and improving performace, yet as soon as It boots, fan goes crazy. At first i thought I screwed up something, but then i replaced It again with the old Core 2duo and the fan started yo work fine again. I did It a few times... And It did It every time.
There os nothing on the BIOS yo regulate fan speed. Does anyone have any idea on how to make fan run quieter with the Xeon? SpeedFan doesnt seem to work with this model.
Specs are:
Dell Optiplex 760 SFF
Intel Xeon x3363
5gb RAM DDR2
Radeon 7470
Win7 home premiun

Thanks!

Solution
The Xeon X3363 is a 80W CPU. What was your C2D? I suspect it was a lower wattage processor that came with a cooler that is too small for the Xeon. So it has to run at full RPM to try to cool the processor.

Makes sense, C2D is E8400 which is 65W , 15 lower. I think I'll try to get a small noctua in there (I see no other options)
Thanks!

If you have th basic extruded aluminum heatsink the copper based soldered fin version should work. Dell#JP911 or NP048 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NP048-Dell-Optiplex-745-755-780-Small-Form-Factor-CPU-Heatsink-Lot-F-/182206978247
Between being a BTX,small form, and a Dell you won't have much luck with aftermarket ATX coolers (I own a pile of them) the CPU is at 45* angle, and the mounting is part of the heatsink cover with a non standard bolt pattern.

I do have the basic heatsink, what I did was buying a Noctua 80mm PWM fan and a cable adapter for the 5 pin connection on he motherboard, that way I'm not aiming at lower rpm but more efficient and silent fan....
I don't know If this will be as expected but I'll find out monday haha
Thanks for the answer

The Dell BIOS is looking for a certain powered fan on the fan header. if you look at your old fasn you will see that it has a rating in Amps which will probably be much higher than the aftermarket fan. This might cause a fan failure message and require F1 to start. Since BTX is a one fan form factor this is a serious fault. Even if you put the old fan back it won't clear. If this happens you need to go to the Maintainance page in the BIOS and clear the alert manually. The heatsink I listed above is what Dell would have provided with the 95W Q0650 in that system. Prices vary considerably. It would probably be very helpful to have it if you want a quieter fan anyway. With a better heatsink the original fan can run much slower. 30% PWM is the BTX fan idle speed spec. IMHO the better heatsink will help you no matter which fan you use.

Wow! Nice insight, thanks. I have checked the links you provided earlier but it said "product not available", I don't know if it has to do with stock issues or location...
I'll check out how my mistake works haha (f1 key was already required since processor replacement, yes I upgraded BIOS)
Thanks, I'll post whatever happens over here
