optiplex 780 mt not turning on

the optiplex 780 mt i was working on to turn into a low end gaming pc will not turn on . i was takeing off the heat sink and takeing out the cpu to see if it can be changed . i placed the cpu back into the socket with the gold triangle faceing the bottom left corner . now it will not turn on , the power button is amber but not blinking , and the lights showing things like internet connection are blinking green . did i brake the cpu or put it in wrong or get thermal paste on the back ? or is it a problem with something besides the cpu that happend on coincidence .please help , it coast me $160 to get it and a gpu .
