Morning Guys,

What it is, is;

A colleague of mine recently bought some new RAM (4*4GB) to try and speed up three machines (2 of the above and 1 HP ProDesk 600 G1 Small Form Factor) at work. The logic was, we'll buy 4 sticks, take all the old RAM out and put 2 of the legacy 3 (4GB) sticks in once pc. For reasons unknown to me he decided to put the two stock Dell 4GB sticks into the HP (Which weirdly isn't having any issues) and share the new RAM between the other two.

The other two we've had some problems with. One of the machines had problems booting, took a long, long time to boot and also had some lines across the screens etc. Other than that, we're looking good with that machine, call it Machine A. Machine B had the same slow first boot, other than that, initially looked fine.

After a month or so we had some problems with no display signals being sent to the monitors. Unplugging and reconnecting the HDMI and DVI into the dGPU (HD5450, nothing trick,) seemed to fix the problem temporarily. We had a new GPU to try and fix this intermittent problem but it didn't. Now with the two sticks of new RAM in Machine A, we couldn't get any signal to the monitors at all. I took out one of the two sticks and left 4GB in DIMM Slot 1, then it booted fine.

Obviously I can leave it like this and it will work, but that wouldn't be ideal.

Can anybody explain to me why we're having these issues, hopefully if it's a timings issue or something like that then we can adjust it and we haven't wasted any money.

Few key points;

  • The old Dell RAM in the HP was 1600mhz DDR3, Samsung stuff. I'm afraid I don't have details of the latencies to hand.

    The new stuff, is Corsair XMS3 DDR3, 1300mhz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v.

This is baffling me now so I'd be most grateful of any light anyone can perhaps shed on why this wasn't working. Even if I have wasted my money I'd be happy knowing!

Thanks for reading guys,

Callum

Solution
Prebuilts are pretty much locked, but they might have added some support for DRAM, and yes there is a small degree of risk, though following the manufacturers directions is generally safe
Hey,

Thanks for the response. I guess that makes sense from the manufacturers point of view.

The BIOS on the dell machines was like nothing I've ever seen before. Pretty comprehensively locked down. Will an update give me more control?

Also does a BIOS update carry a degree of risk?

Many thanks!
