Well I know that the Opty probably overclocks better. I have read that they tend to be more conservative with the clock ratings on the Optys.

Opty is still better, since you can overclock hugely, even without speacial cooling.

The opterons as I understand it do have 128kbs per core, just that it is often listed wrong because the cache is divided into two 64kb sections per core (data/instructions). I could be wrong but thats just what Ive read/heard.

The ocing potential would totally waste the performance gain from the extra 64KB of L1 cache.

I also think it's listed incorrectly on Newegg.

Both chips have 2x64KB instruction cache and 2x64KB data cache. The 170 product data sheet is here.

Everyone's saying Opty's are better for OCing, as they are the better quality chips.

I've got a 170 on order, so that's where my vote goes.

Heh... gawd that's... confusing.

The spec for opty 1xx just looks like a single core to me.

Pretty much thought.. Just one pin makes all that difference.

each core has 64k + 64k - has been for years with AMD designs, why would an opteron have less when servers usually have more?

The sites are just misunderstood, when they say 128k + 128k thats true, aswell as 64 + 64 but thats just for one core.

Even an AMD K6 has 64k L1

Here's a link that shows Opty 170 spec's as the same as 4400 x2

Opty 170

Still confusing though. I thought by looking at the L2 cache would help me see that it was a dual core, when I saw something like 2 X 1MB.

I guess these Opty 170 cores basically share the same L2 cache?

Of course it is lil easier to see that 170's have 2MB L2 cache according to the above link.

Damn Marketing!!
