I'm trying to setup my new NAS server which I built. I have two 3TB WD Red drives, and a 64GB SSD but I am not planning on using RAID at this time. For me, getting the maximum amount of space is the most important.
I use CrashPlan+ Family Unlimited, so I plan to install that and use it for backups. That takes care of the reliability in lieu of a RAID.
I thought about using FreeNAS for the OS, but it looks like CrashPlan support isn't completely there. So I'm probably going to go with Linux. I'll probably go with Ubuntu, which I'm most familiar with, or Fedora. But if someone has a suggestion for my use case, I'm open to that. I haven't compared the major distros recently so I don't know if there is something else that is more suited for this.
Should I use ext4? Or is it possible to do ZFS and is there much of an advantage? I'm guessing that ext4 will suffice and be easier to setup.
Any tips on what to use on my server? Here are some things I want to be able to do:
For the last couple items, I've only begun researching my options. I've found Sockso, EZStream, Subsonic, Plex, and VLC, but recommendations would help. I may just try them all.
What's the best way to allow secure access to the server over the internet? It is behind a router, so I'll either port forward, or just DMZ. I'd like to be able to access it all from anywhere. I'll probably setup multiple accounts, such as one that can just read. Also, I shouldn't be able to access other machines on the network from outside via the server.

■ Samba sharing (need to share to Windows and Mac)
■ Maybe an FTP server
■ RDP from Windows would be nice (I think xrdp lets you do this?), but I'll definitely have an SSH server
■ Probably Apache/MySQL/PHP
■Stream my music (like Google music) from my LAN or over the internet
■Stream other media to an Xbox360, Windows, Mac (videos/music)
