I have this Dell Inspirion 2500. It has 512mb of ram and a 40gb HDD and a Intel Celeron. I am looking for an os for this laptop that it can run. I would like to be able to browse the internet and watch youtube videos. I have tried Bodhi Linux, the computer stops spining the disk half way through the live boot. i have tried salent Linux. the desktop wont load, i'm stuck the command line. I have tried swift Linux, it wont finish the live boot. Trisquel Linux booted and installed perfectly, but apps like midori web browser crash after opening. Linux Mint 10.10 LXDE edition worked perfectly. i am limited in the OS I can live boot because this computer only has a CD ROM drive, so the OS has to be under 680mb and itis too old to support USB boot. As i am typing this post, I am about to try slackel 1.0. Any help would be great.

and there an OS called PUD Linux LXDE 0.4.8.6 that i am really interested in,but there download links will not work. if anyone can find a ISO of this exact version of PUD Linux, that would be amazing!!!!

Puppylinux. Also avoid watching youtube videos in the browser. Takes a LOT of cpu. Also Use youtube-dl + mpv instead. You can set firefox/chrome extensions to do this automatically

512mb ram is fine for light browsing and various other tasks. Open box or lxde/lxqt. Crunchbang/gobang linux. Or Lubuntu will also be fine with 512mb ram.

Maybe also use dillo browser instead.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question. I think you need to upgrade to a modern laptop or computer. To me, there's not as much a computer with 512mb of ram can do.
