Hi, stupid noob question here...

I am preparing to build my first PC and I will be installing Windows 8.1 on a new SSD. Can I purchase a second (identical) SSD and run them as RAID 1 for the operating system? I've heard that SSD's aren't quite as reliable as HDD's, so I was thinking it would be a good idea to have my OS on a mirror in case one of my SSD's fails. Does that sound right? If so, do I just set up the RAID in my BIOS first, then install the OS?

SSD's are just as reliable (if not more) than HDD's now. You don't need to worry about setting them up in RAID 1.

If you really want a backup, a simple backup utility would work perfectly well. RAID 1 really isn't a good choice for home backup like what you're describing.
