So what i want to do is transfer my OS to my SSD because i upgraded my HDD to a new SSD and HDD. Is it possible to hook up the SSD, Drag the OS files from the secondary partition on my old HDD and put them on my SSD instead of downloading a whole new OS? I think you can i'm just not sure, and if so, how?

Solution

No, that won't work. You must use one of the current migration tools.

But...some investigation first:
How much is your total current used space?
How large is the SSD?
How old is the current installation?
Does it work to your satisfaction?

(You can't do 'just the OS'. All or nothing)

My OS is on a secondary partition, with 6.62GB out of 10GB, Primary partition is 55.1GB free of 455GB, for a total of 403.28 GB.

SSD is 250GB

Windows 7 Home Premium, it's 3 years old

Yeah i like Windows 7, but i don't want all the stuff i have on my HDD i have right now, wanna just take the OS, i have a partition manager application but i don't know if that will be of any use, it's called AOMEI partition assistant, would i be able to delete my primary partition, leave the second one which has windows on it and then transfer files from that, since it will be just the os?

You're not looking at the right thing. A Windows 7 install cannot be "6.62GB out of 10GB".
And no, that partition thing won't help.

Yeah i see what you're saying, i found the windows folder on my main partition and its 85.1GB. So the only way to transfer the files is to take the whole hard drive and copy it over? the other thing is just get the OS (i have the disk) and then get a code from microsoft?

You can discover your current license key with either Belarc Advisor or MagicalJellybean.
Use that with your install media and do a clean install on the SSD. This will require a clean install of your applications as well, though.

Given what appears to be an odd install, a clean install on the SSD is highly recommended.

Since you have a windows dvd you can use that to do a clean install on a ssd.
Your activation code is still good.
Your settings are easy to move via windows easy transfer.
Unfortunately, apps will need to be reinstalled because you are creating a new registry.

I might suggest the easy thing to do would be to buy a 500gb Samsung evo and use their migration utility.
If all does not fit, you can exclude specific files.

When done, all your hard drive files(but not apps) will be available.

I don't mind a clean install of having all my applications gone since it will wipe the stuff i don't need. I kinda don't understand what you're saying with the license key, sorry, so those are programs to see what your current license is on your OS? Do they help you install? cause i don't understand this part "Use that with your install media"

You have a DVD to install with? If so, install one of those applications, Run it.
It will report your existing license key. No need to buy a new one.

Then install with that DVD.

So i understand what you're saying, but let me try to understand more. So, i install one of those programs, run it, it will find my product key, then install my SSD, insert dvd then boot from dvd and it will be able to activate my product key?

Run that application. Print it, or write out your license key
Disconnect all other drives except the DVD and SSD
Install the OS
When it asks for the license key, enter that which you wrote down.
