[SOLVED] OS X reinstall troubles

Hello, I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro which I need to replace the hard drive in. The problem is OS X won't fully download from the App Store without it freezing, and eventually crashing the laptop. It gets to exactly 5.44 GB when it freezes. I also can't download the latest macOS Sierra because of the laptop's age. Is there any way I can get a clean fresh El Capitan install without downloading from the App Store or backing up (that doesn't work either)

you would need to get access to another mac to load it on a USB drive. or make a USB install disk on your current macbook
