Hi hope someone can enlighten me.

When opening a file in word (using office 97') I get a message window
saying this file is being used by: the file path then my name, do I
want to make a copy? if I click cancel I can use the file as normal, if
I say yes then it opens 'read only'. How can I get rid of the message?

would be grateful of any suggestions

Hi tfdtutor,

First, try the recommendation here:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/DocInUse.htm

If that doesn't solve the problem, then try rebuilding the Office file
associations.......
Go to Start>Run and key in the following, one at a time, clicking on OK or
hitting ENTER after each:
winword /regserver
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver

Regards,
