Otherside Entertainment Teases 'System Shock 3'

I think there's a huge market for we older PC gamers who enjoyed the 90s into early-mid 00s games like SS. I've long questioned why game developers don't just remake or otherwise create new sequels to what we used to love. For remakes, just make the core story the same but update with new maps, challenges, friends and foes, and side stories. Hollywood has been doing it for years in movies. Decades even.

I mean, how many millions of PC gamers for years have been waiting for Half Life 3? On top of that, you've got an entire new generation of gamers growing up on Xbox/PS consoles who never heard of the System Shock series (or Descent, or Quake, or Deus Ex, etc.) so for them it would be a completely new game regarding remakes.

... just make the core story the same but update with new maps, challenges...

You mean more fetch quests and climbing towers to reveal objectives? -.-

Remakes seem to come in two brands:

You have the 'HD Remake' where apparently up scaling a game without improving on the engine is sufficient cause to call it a remake.

Or the spiritual remake/origin where the core game is basically torn to shreds and given an overhaul by someone who's strings are clearly pulled by an accountant (*Cough* Episodic FF7 *Cough*).

It seems the one thing everyone wants that no company wants to provide is the same game (take Morrowind for example), but any bugs are ironed out and the engine/textures are updated. That doesn't mean pasting it over the top of a new engine and losing original features (Elder Scrolls without Jump spell is not Elder Scrolls)

I don't want new quests but if you insist, they better not affect the damn story. Use them to flesh out existing character back stories.
I don't want a new UI layout, just make it prettier
I don't want my conversation choices defined by a freaking analog stick wheel
No god damn tower/map/objective reveals

BUT clearly that's not what makes them money so this is all wishful thinking :(

I'm surprised they're not taking the HD remake route, it seemed like it worked for Resident Evil. Even if you bastardize a remake, it seems preferable than making a sequel to an older series (Duke Nukem Forever?). :p

I kinda wish this would happen for more games though: Rocket Jockey, Die by the Sword, and all the other classic Pc games that are dated but retain unique core mechanics.

I don't know why someone is making a sequel to Ultima Underworld; There are no longer the technological limitations that require the world to be exclusively underground or indoors with no outdoors, where the developer has great control over limiting how much can be viewed at once, and therefore not much need for sophisticated variable level of detail systems.

I was able to delete my multi-postings before, but now I'm unable to, and I don't want to waste my time any more. Why do you have to make my life difficult? Someone please just tell me how to delete my comments.
