Out of the game for awhile

AMD Athlon 64 3500
1gb DDR400 2-2-3-2
DFI LP SLI-DR
Geforce 6800 256mb SLI
80gb Western Digital SATA
DVD-ROM
500W Ultra X-Connect

now as you can see in 2005 this system wasnt bad, but today even in wow its sluggish in northrend and just want to get a better video system in there. The CPU is a venice E6 running @ 2.7ghz.

Now given my specs what video card do you suggest bugject is 100-120 but i figure even a budget card should be my 6800's SLI, and these are NV41 cards both doing 400/800

and before anyone says anything, I have ordered another 2x512mb sticks from newegg to make 2gb and am price checking on 939 dual core chips

you could upgarde to a AMDX2 I got sup com to run on it on full a bit laggy through, or you can overclock that one.

you can get like a 9600GT or even 9800, you might be able to find a nice 8800GT/X going around

also you could do with more RAM as well

well as i said i did order another 1gb DDR kit from newegg and i heared the E6 dont suffer from the 4 slots filled bug, so i saved money and just got another 2 512mb sticks. So now there is 4 512mb sticks in the comp. As for CPU i found an x2 3800 manchester for 50 dollars and an opteron 165 for 65, just cant decide which to go get though is my 3500 oc'd really worse than duel core, because when i build this rig, single core still was better gaming, then again the x2 4800 was still over 700 dollars @ fry's

but wouldnt a 9800 be overkill for the system, i mean I want a card that i can also use lol, as buying new board cpu and ram isnt really a choice, budget is tight @ 200 for everything i need, its why im sticking with my DFI LP 939 board

With a maximum $200 you could change the MB/RAM/CPU AND card.
True, it will not be a Crysis killer but it would be more expandable.
The I would say a 9600GT or HD4670 would be a better bet as neither use much juice: The HD4670 actually needs no extra power connector!

na a daul core these days partucaly for games like sup com and the like as games have moved on your are right in saying that most games don't use all the cores but say if you like to listen to music via winamp while playing say sup com than it will help there.

no the 9800 is not what I would call over kill it depends on the budget its more of a mainstream card through.

well it will be paird with an x2 3800 i went and picked up today from the computer store, it hit 2.4ghz @ 1.55V lol, and yes this isnt stock cooling. So x2 3800 @ 2.4 with 1gb DDR right now, another 1gb on the way. So what goes best with it. And I do like to listen to music with ME2TW and WoW or did with wow, it lags to bad now, and ME2TW always lagged with music but i play for 12 hours at time when i launch it so music is always nice lol.

I seem slower in my games though, ran a little CSS and it actully seems slower to me lol. Im guessing the extra 300mhz on older games I might notice if its single thread and CPU dependant, I lost about 4FPS between the 2 CPU's lol, but im still getting over 80FPS @ 12x10 all high with 2xAA and 4xAF. Thats one thing id like to improve, for the older games, Ive seen my friend play CSS on his rig, and i like it, he playes 1440x900 with an 8800GTS640 with 8xCSAA and 16xAF and it looks super nice compared to mine and he keeps 100FPS so settings like that in CSS I would like but he also runs an E6700 oced to 3.4ghz. So knowing i got the x2 and got it to 2.4 what suggestion?

And games that i dont care about are

Crysis (played it on his all the way through and well it wasnt that fun)
RA3 (dont like the changes to CnC)

so if it cant run either of those it doesnt matter lol

ok ill look into those, prolly go with the 9600GT im more of an Nvidia guy, after my 9800pro died within weeks of purchase, its why i built this comp anyway. I had an MSI K8N Neo2 AGP 939 board so I could keep my TI-4600, and bought a 9800pro, bought a 9800pro which didn't work 2 weeks after i bought it, RAM'd it got cash back, and bought this current board after hearing the GF6+NF3 issues and a 6800, bought another 6800 later. So i think ill go with a 9600, should i go GT or GSO?

also is there any value anymore in a matched pair of EVGA 6800 256mb PCIe cards with NV41 cores, or better to just keep them as a backup. I know i paid 250 for the first one and 170 for the second one but that was along time ago, first one i got in March 2005, and the second one i got in June 2005 so i suspect value declined

The 9600GT should serve you very well, the cash left over could be the start of saving up for another rig. 😀

That should let you play those games @1xxx resolutions with the eyecandy on.
Dont expect anti aliasing setting and anisotropic filtering at full but you can really game with good framerates.
you can do that now and get a cpu/mobo combo later.
