Question Outdated dvd user

I own a RCA 5.1 home theater i had for 10-12 years...it don't work now. I have a library of old dvds and cds that i played through it. I googled the question "what is considered the current conventional way to view(and own) movies and albums nowdays" and got no answer...can anyone offer a nonbiased opinion? This is so i know my next move for viewing and listening nowdays.

No... I mean what is the current fad or most recent in the way of owning a movie or an album? I've read where hd dvd was dropped in 2008..and blu-ray was on it's way. I'm guessing when i think that downloading pay movies and music onto a computer and then through a tv was how it's done nowdays...somebody to clue me in on current methods is what i need... I dont want another home theater.

Still DVD or Bluray.

You can purchase via Amazon. It is then apparently 'yours'.
