I have a laptop with a HDMI port and a monitor with a VGA input. I would like to buy a HDMI to VGA cable so I can use my monitor with my laptop but I've seen cables which also have a 3.5mm jack to output the sound as well. I just want my sound to my on my laptop as normal, or to use my headphones with it. Is there a way of only outputting video without the sound over HDMI? Does it make a difference if I get a cable with or without a headphone jack as well?

Cheers for you help everyone.

Solution
The regular HDMI cable to connect to a monitor shouldn't effect your sound, as long as you aren't plugging in the 3.5mm one mentioned. Since the other end of the cable will be VGA that doesn't include sound. That requires the separate connection. So you should be fine keeping it on the computer itself or through headphones.
