Yesterday i start randomly having issues with my os then a hdd, An old 2TB WD Black.
Suddenly windows decides that the windows key, start screen and right click on the task bar isnt going to work anymore beyond the windows key working only on exiting full screen applications and right click working everywhere but on apps pined to the task bar. i think this may or may not have something to do with my issue...
so i go too it on windows explorer and try too open two folders i use for backing up specific files on another disk and a prompt comes up stating something along the lines of, "Location path is not available" with no other option but to click through it. Then the folders disappear. I try to research what happened to no avail as i cant and couldn't recall exactly what the prompt said. Then a few hours later i restart my pc and get a Windows Is Repairing disk errors on the Drive letter and title of that disk. i skip it and go into windows to see if those files are back, they aren't so i restart and let the prompt playout the next time it comes up. When i let it run it stops at %50. its the middle of the night at that time; im tired so i leave it to work while i sleep. I wake up and go to my Pc and log in. Then i open op a window of Windows explorer and the disk now has the same drive letter but is titled the same name as another disk and is now 865GB lighter. I know for a fact it had around 140GB free certainly less than that 800GB Free before this happened. Absolutely everything isn't gone, just the largest files and clusters of folders that housed them.
The thing is; I haven't tried to mirror that disk or partition. Or mirror/copy anything to it.I Know for a fact that haven't done anything like that to that drive in at least a year and a half...
My question is. What are my options for data recovery software wise? Or am i just out of luck?
I can accept just having to Reinstall/ re-image windows, windows but id hate to lose that data...
