Yeah I just noticed I am having a ton of difficulty overclocking this apu with stock cooler and with big coolers with phobya (the best paste on market).
(only thing i seem to be able to overclock is usually only the IGPU)

It doesn't seem to overclock smoothly like the Intel G3258

Can anyone walk me through a set by step process?
I don't need such big overclocks.. All I am trying to do is improve my Passmark Cpu Score and or Windows Experience as the G3258 did on one of my builds.

A6 7400K score on passmark goes down when overclocked to 4.0 or 4.2 Ghz
Passmark cpu score 2,747 stock but on high performance mode(locked)
Overclocked was 2,6xx on 4.0 Ghz and 4.2 was about same roughly.
So when i overclock my performance is going down instead..

So I am assuming its other things like voltage that I need to do?

Motherboard for both systems is Gigabyte F2A58M-HD2
I think it allows memory from 1600-1866 max I believe. (so no issue with ram)
Also uses the 2x 4pin 12v so it is getting enough juice.

Let me know Thanks
J

Huh? So how do I properly test/measure overclocks performance?

like i said. Intel G3258 you can see and feel performance from overclock and WEI will show 7.0 to 7.3 point improvement.

So How am I supposed to do that for the APUS. As they are supposed be extremely overclockable.

But remember don't overclock with stock cooler, stock cooler are not good. Overclocking is step by Step method, you can't go directly on some frequency and voltages. ... First Download the AMD overdrive software. It will available on official AMD website to monitor your temps correctly. ..First Download thecpu stability testing software prime95 from here :
http://www.mersenne.org/download/
Don't overclock by any software because overclocking is not the thing that can be done by software. First set the XMP memory profile (if exists) enabled to set your RAM correctly. Then Go in BIOS and find the CPU clock ratio, this is the multiplier setting. It starts at a multi of A (some no.)x 100(BCLK)(normal factory settings) to give you A Gigahertz. So up it .5 at a time and boot to os and test with P95 for stability and monitor your temps. Do this for approximately 20 minutes. If it passes raise the multi another .5 and try again. You'll get to a point where either P95 won't pass or your temp will gone so high. If the temps gone high you'll have to stop and work on cooling. If P95 fails then go to the Advanced voltage section in bios and add some volts to the CPU VCore . Stay in offset and just add a bit by tapping on the "+" key and test again.
If your temp goes really high them you have to stop and keep it to cooling. A step will arrive when your P95 never pass or temp immediately go high. Them you have to stop overclocking and you get your extreme speed of your processor. ....

And remember the AMD overdrive software counts the temp down not up. Don't use Hwmonitor and other third party softwares as they don't work properly with AMD CPUs. They always show temp more than existing. Now in AMD OD, if your CPUs temp is 50 ° c. if the thermal margin shows 30 ° c then after raiseof 30°c in your CPUs temp, you have on the line of overheating. When you overclock, of the thermal margin tends to reach the 0°c you have to stop overclocking and keep it to cooling. You can also use Gigabyte easy tune software to monitor your temps with AMD OD. .... :)

Ok thanks. So it is simple as the Intel. I just need do it the way I overclocked the Intel. (NO SOFTWARE) I overclocked the Intel from 3.2GHZ i think to whopping 4.4GHZ Very Stable and Ran BF4 and WEI and Passmark, CPU/GPU Burner.
All Overlocking was done just at Bios Only.

Have you overclocked your APU 4.7 very stable? is it on water? And what was your easier slight overclock with the least effort. As like i said maybe software sucks and all overclocks on it suck..

I overclocke My APU to 4.7 GHz by the method that I tell earlier. I am very lucky to have this overclock and stable at 4.7 GHz with just hyper 212 Evo. My APU just works on 1.3v and clocks at 4.7 GHz with the stable thermal margin greater than 15-20°c when tested by prime95. It's because of it is black edition APU. All Black Edition APU are more reliable than normal and just made for extreme overclock and stay stable. For 4.7 GHz I ran the test for 2 hours. At your extreme point, run the test for long time... I can go further if I had a good water cooler but on hyper 212 Evo it is great, don't use stock cooler on just ideal conditions, overclock is the further thing, get the aftermarket cooler hyper 212 Evo which will be better.

Sigh. No luck. I remember seeing XMP but since its been detected this time the xmp thing is gone. it detected the ram correctly 2x 4gb 1600mhz.
So i don't know if that is stopping me.

3.8 turbo is what i have it locked on high performance mode.

so it starts at 3.4Ghz. (always running at 3.8)

I try to go to 3.85 (but you can't) so i try 3.9
and it sometimes goes to windows and freezes like sec right after. (i know the temps are cold)

I have gigabyte board. I can send photo of what bios looks like if you want.

It also could be cause the boost clock is confusing me.
As of now i put cpu clock to 3.5 from 3.4 and boost is at stock 3.8.

It booted fine. but what else should i do. and what should boost clock be set to?

Ok Did all That. Updated to newest bios successfully.

Now here are 4 pics of what I think you need.

Extremely sorry for late reply. ...
All settings are cleared. You don't have XMP memory profile so don't do anything in memory settings as it has initially 1600 MHz clocked.
Then Go in Advanced frequency settings\advanced cpu core settings, rise the CPU clock ratio to 35(when you will hit + from auto it will start from 8 to give 0.8 GHz, go directly to 35 that will give you 3.5 Gigahertz) to give 3.5GHz. Then boot in os and do stress testing by prime95. Watch the CPU status in AMD overdrive. Do it for 20-30 minutes. If all the cores stay at 100% means you have passed the test. So the test and see the warning in prime95. If it shows 0 errors and 0 warnings then you successfully passed the test. Then restart the computer, go in bios and up the CPU ratio to 36, it will give you 3.6 GHz. Again go in os and do the same thing, stress testing. A time will occur when one of the core or some of the cores will drop their usage to some % from you 100 %, it means you have failed the test. Stop the test and check for errors and warnings. Then restart the computer and go in Bios, advanced voltage settings. Raise the CPU VCore to 0.006v( or whichever smallest possible, I have 0.006v which is smallest possible for me) and then boot in os and do same stress testing. Also watch the thermal margin. If your temp goes really high and thermal margin tending to zero then you have to stop and keep it to cooling. A step will arrive when your P95 never pass or temp immediately go high. Them you have to stop overclocking and you get your extreme speed of your processor. . I hope this helps. ....:)

My recommended way to overclock is to put the CPU back at stock speed, if already not. Start by increasing the MhZ by 0.5 MhZ. Continue until the computer begins to malfunction. (e.g. BSOD's, freezing, glitching) After that, subtract 0.4 MhZ from the current MhZ. (e.g. 3702.5 MhZ-0.4 MhZ=3702.1 MhZ) Bring the CPU back to stock speed, noting the max speed of the CPU after subtraction. Begin lowering the MhZ by 0.5 MhZ until the computer starts malfunctioning. (e.g. BSOD's, freezing, glitching) Then add 0.5 MhZ to the current MhZ. (e.g. 3301.5 MhZ+0.5 MhZ=3302.0 MhZ) Adjust as necessary. PLEASE DO NOT GO BY MY VALUES!! THEY ARE STOCK VALUES. Also, stress test after you increase/decrease the CPU speed to confirm that it is stable.

Ha, well I can help here. I found out that if your igpu is on any kind of decent load the cpu will just instant throttle. Had this issue a while ago but you need to edit the pstates.
http://imgur.com/MURMKAO
As you can see, the cpu drops like a corpse from the before and after shots. No overheating issues were even present. I was always wondering why the cpu temps goes down when I put a load on the igpu :/.
So I used a program called AmdMsrTweaker.
It sets the pstate "p5" to 42ghz at 1.3v then set the pstate to p5 (You lucky bastered some how got 4.7ghz at 1.3v) and it also sets p6 (If your cpu temps goes too high it throttles to this speed, please do not set this to the same overclock. Unless you want your computer to die of cooking it self)
here it is:

PAUSE
C:\Users\Josh\Documents\x64\AMDMsrTweaker.exe p5=42@1.30
C:\Users\Josh\Documents\x64\AMDMsrTweaker.exe p5
C:\Users\Josh\Documents\x64\AMDMsrTweaker.exe p6=35@1.150
PAUSE

The program location may be different from yours (unless your actual name is josh and you put it in your documents). Put the bat in the startup folder and it should run every time. Take out the "pause"(s) if you don't like a black box every time you boot.
WARNING WILL TOTALY OVERRIDE ANY BOIS CPU CLOCK AND CPU VOLTAGE SETTING. Sorry any Linux users out there, I don't know if this is going to work for you.

Sorry for super late response. I am on new setup with A6-7400K

Asus A88XM-A
2x4GB= 8 GB Avexir ram
and stock cooler with aftermarket cool master paste. (ran out of phobia)

4.2Ghz at the moment stable.
my temps are 42-58. and max might of reached 82 but i am unsure.

I am going to push the limits with stock cooler.
As i really need a 7.1-7.4 Windows score for these combo to be better than 3258 and same as 7700K or like 7850K.
The cache will never be the same, but ill see what it can do.

I went from 6.3-6.9 😀
(windows score suck and we all know, but it helps me figure out what I need to run BF4 at good stable FPS with my GPU's when over 7.1+ CPU Score)

i got it to 4.6Ghz on That board. I think its the max though. my temps were fine but couldn't go any higher than .036 add volt. .0325 gets you 4.6Ghz
So Asus 88XM-A can't go no more than 4.6Ghz.
You can make it to 4.6 on stock cooler!
but i put my monster cooler and I couldn't get any higher.

Okay. Glad to hear!

Yeah only issue is my Windows score moves from 6.6 to 6.9. (it won't go back to 6.9 again)
at 4.6 Ghz

And battle field 4 is running really shitty but league of legends maxed out is ok.
I tried 3 different video cards and result is the same.

but it passes alllll the over clock tests and is running cool.
Anyone have huge issues with battlefield 4 on a6-7400k+graphics card?

I get 30-35fps but dips like son of a bitch. and locks up for 1second at times.

This is only amd processor that I ever encountered that runs bf4 so shitty.
The following Amd processors are the ones I've tested.
FX4130
FX4300
FX6300
FX8310
FX8320
FX8320E
FX8350
FX8370E

A8-6600K
A6-7400K (only one that seems to not handle BF4 at a stable FPS, I would be happier if it ran 30fps but stayed there, the dips suck so bad)
A8-3800K
A10-7700K
A10-7850K

Also just removed the video card and ran passmark and got 2911 CPU score! which is good but Windows experience says 6.6 Score.
But only league runs pretty good with GPU.
So going to test CPU on passmark with Graphics card.

I would recommend leaving everything in bios as auto because you can use AMD overdrive . I use that program to raise both clock speeds and voltage for the apu. When you over clock, you have to raise the voltage as well. I have my CPU clocked at 4.3Ghz with a voltage of 1.35V and my GPU clocked at 1Ghz with a voltage of 1.45V. So far my highest temp was ~65C playing NFS: The Run at a solid 30FPS. I use stock cooler with the stock paste, 8GB 1866 CL9 dual channel ram, and so far so good! Loving the A6!

hey I'm having a similar problem with my apu, I'm trying to get my A6 7400 black edition to 4.7 ghz , the furthest Ive gotten it was 4.4 ghz. I've adjusted the voltage many times with amd overdrive, and autoclock sucks,I have a gigabyte motherboard and I thing if I adjust voltage in the bios I can get it to work. anyone hear wanna help me acheive this goal like the original poster?
