So here's the situation, i just bought a used gtx 650 ti for 35 $ u.s, im happy with it. It plays most games i need to play at high or ultra settings always above 30 fps except for one particular recent AAA title (im not going to mention the name, i'm not getting paid to do advertisement or publicity).

This particular game runs with a blend of medium and low settings at 1080p. Average fps is above 30 but it dips frequently to 25-26 fps which is just 2 or 3 fps under what i can endure. So i thought about overclocking the card but i am a beginner and i don't want to risk anything. Is it worth it to overclock (as i said i only need a 2 or 3 fps more, in other words a 7% boost would be enough). And if it's worth it, could i have some advices considering that i never overclocked any gpu.

i have to mention: the gpu is already oc out of the box with 980 mhz core clock instead of 925 and i am not comfortable with changing the voltages.

PS: my psu is a EVGA 400 W (30 A on single 12v rail)

thanks for taking the time to reply

If you go in small increments there shouldn't be any worry about having a headache with troubleshooting if it doesn't work, you could do a bit of overclock with out touching voltage, but you'll be limited. Use afterburner for the overclock, and try unigine's valley for benchmarking. There is the other program which everyone uses for benchmarking just can't remember the name right now.... But that one pushes your gpu too far, and personally I've had a gpu break after that benchmarker ( without it having any overclock, it was just old)

Try googling some examples of other people's overclock on similar gpu too yours to get a better idea of direction
well the 400watt psu may be an issue when overclocking.. it's running stock which i think you should probably have more of a 450watt. The problem with overclokcing your GPU is the Core Voltage, As soon as you start playing with the voltage thats when it will go to a more dangerous zone, the hz and vram can be tweaked without much worry, with afterburner program or what not. if it's too much for the gpu.. itll simple start crashing. and you just tone it down a bit till it stops crashing. (keep an eye on the temperatures of the gpu as well you dont relaly want anything near 90-100c i know it's a big range but still).

Im not too worried about the psu, my cpu and gpu are quite energy efficient and i have a very basic pc (Cpu is Xeon E3-1225,2x 2gb + 1x4 gb ddr3, stock fans, 1 hard drive,1 cd player and thats it, nothing fancy)

could it be possible to keep default voltage if i oc with very small 10 mhz steps and do not exceed 60 mhz on core clock and 90 mhz on memory speed? And what free program would you recommend to benchmark my oc?

Would there be any risk of loosing display signal, bsod or any major bugs with that very small oc that I intend to do ?

thanks a lot for taking the time to answer by the way.
