Overclock e8400 = HOT

I overclocked the e8400 on stock cooler with arctic thermal paste to 3.6ghz, but once I checked the temps they gradually rose untill I turned the computer off at 90C. Im thinking about getting a different cooler so I can run my DDR2-800 ram at 400mhz so I can get 3.6ghz (9x multiplier right?) What options do I have, and what did I do wrong, the e8400 should be able to run fine. I also tested at a mesely 3.2ghz and it slowly rose to 75C untill I turned it off. Good cheap cooler? I still have the paste.

I've got an E8400 (E0) at 4.0 GHz @ 1.30 Volts Bios (1.28 in Cpuz) Runs max 56 degrees C with a Schythe Ninja+ cooler.

What Vcore do you have set in the Bios??

Lower your vcore (in Bios) as low as it will run 1.0XX-1.1XX, mild OC to keep temps down (under 70), then get a good aftermarket cooler. Thats all you need.

Check the airflow in your PC, maybe you have a fan blowing hot air from your graphics card onto your CPU, or you have a fan extracting the CPU air so the CPU fan doesn't have anything to blow onto the CPU... Buy a good after market cooler, that should sort out any heat issues =D

Hmm, vcore is set to 1.12 volts. Just so you know its also got an hd4850 gpu which is loud as hell when playing crysis on very high (running at 29fps), packed inside a Coolermaster RC690 case.

The biggest problem is the stock cooler. Change that out and you'll be fine. It works OK for standard clocks, but with any overclocking, it quickly becomes woefully inadequate.

I don't know if its the cooler at that stage or not. The possibility could be that your HS is just not seated right? I remember with Intel cooler I was able run my OC e6600 @ 3.0GHz with idle temps around 40-43 and full load at 50-55.

i did have trouble putting the heatsink on, i had no idea how the clip thingys worked. I actually still dont, so if anyone has a resource anywhere.... I will take it off and retry everything.

Well once you take off make sure u clean and then reapply the paste and as for putting heatsink correctly you want to push the pins diagonally. As in first push the bottom right pin then top left pin then bottom left pin and then top right pin. Also make sure your not applying too much thermal paste.

I think ill just go ahead and get the arctic heatsink (the top rated one on newegg). i remember something about turning knobs on the stock heatsink, when does that come into play? Whats odd is that, when overclocked, it booted slower than when default.
