Hello, I am interested in overclocking my Fx-8320e to 4.0 Ghz on stock cpu cooler. I have a decent air cooling case. My motherboard is the Gigabyte GA970A-UD3P.

Overclocking success is based on how well you did in the "chip" or "silicon lottery". The better binned your processor, ie the better the silicon, the better results you will have when overclocking. The better binned your processor is the higher it will overclock at lower voltages. As you overclock you will need to raise to voltage to get higher and higher clock speeds. As the voltage is raised it creates more and more heat. For these reasons no two processors overclock exactly the same and it is impossible for anyone to tell you what the maximum overclock your processor will achieve.

To answer your question, yes is it possible for the FX 8320E to overclock to 4Ghz on the stock cooler, however it isn't really recommended. If your processor is binned well you should be able to overclock to 4Ghz with little to no increase in Vcore (voltage). Because your not raising the voltage (or raising it very little) you shouldn't experience a large increase in heat. The biggest problem is there are many FX 8350s that need better than stock cooling even when at stock settings when stressed. By overclocking the FX 8320E to 4Ghz you are raising it to the stock performance level of the FX 8350 and may find that you need better than stock cooling.

Best advice I can give you is follow the linked guide and keep a very close eye on your temps under stress testing. If you temps go above 62C at any time then you will need better than stock cooling. For a moderate overclock of 4Ghz the Hyper 212 EVO or Cryorig H7 are both very good budget coolers that will easily allow you to overclock to 4Ghz with complete peace of mind that your temps will be totally under control.
