Maybe the title is a bit misleading... couldn’t find anything better.

I was thinking of maybe putting in a 4790k in my system (k version so that I could overclock).
I then started to think about what would be the best thing to do, thinking value, and time (generations). So, is the best thing to buy a 4790k and a new mobo that supports overclocking as my current one don’t, or is it best to buy a new mobo with 1151 and ddr4 and either get a non k, or a k version cpu and overclock that. (Maybe Thinking i7 6700/k idk)
Maybe a bit of a hard to answer question, but is it worth it to do that, or is it time to upgrade to a newer platform? (LGA 1151).

Solution
The Z370 only supports the 8xxx processors. The z270 usally has more features than the Z170.
The z270 willsupport the 7xxx processor out of the box the 170 could need a BIOS update.
