Overclocked 2600 not showing as 2800 in windows

Anyone know why this is? I've overclocked it to a 2800 at 2.08 GHz but it
still shows the CPU as a 2600.

Could it be you have a T-Bred core? A 2800+ 2.08Ghz CPU has 512K L2
where as a T-Bred 2600 has 256K L2, so the BIOS is probably just picking
2600 since the L2 isn't all there and it's confused what CPU you are
running, or you just need to update the BIOS to recognize faster CPUs.

bios upgrade I'm afraid, if there's one available.

It's a Barton. If I update the bios, will everything on my computer reset?

As long as the MHz is correct I wouldn't worry about it.

Some Bioses just check the multiplier that's why. They only check the
multiplier and the 133, 166 and 200 FSB. That is that even though your
CPU may perform LIKE a 2800+ it is still a 2600+.

Yeah, thats what I've since learned. Does it perform "like" a 2800 or does
it perform exactly as a 2800, seeing as how mine now has exactly the same
GHz and cache?

It should perform "better" than a 2800+ since you use a higher fsb to
reach that performance. After all 200X10 performs better than 100X20.

Wow, I didn't know that. Why do most overclockers increase the multiplier
then? Heat issues?

Overclockers usually increased the multiplier due to stability issues.
Before nForce 2 the PCI/AGP was not locked so you could only go so high
with fsb so you had to play with multipliers instead. Another reason is
that they had RAM that couldn't do 1:1 in 200 fsb. But higher fsb always
gives more performance at the same speed than higher multiplier.
