[SOLVED] Overclocked i3 8350k vs stock ryzen 2600

Hi

I want to upgrade my cpu but am unsure which upgrade path to chose, my options are either the i3 8350k with a cooler master hyper 212 led turbo or the ryzen 2600 with the stock cooler although I will have to save around $30
more for the ryzen.

Both of the above upgrades include a nzxt h400. I can also get the ryzen with the hyper 212 but I will be stuck with a cooler master e300l case.

What would you guys recommend?

The 2600, even at "stock" will boost to some pretty solid clocks.

Normally I'd ask the specific workload but, given the two options, the 2600 is a no-brainer to me.

Ensure you opt for ~3000MHz RAM in dual channel for Ryzen though.

I was actually leaning towards the i3 but your answer has left me in 2 minds.

My workload would be browsing, excel and gaming at 1200p.

I do have 2x4gb kingston hyperfury x 2400mhz in dual channel, how much of an improvement would the 3000mhz be?

Also the case I'm using has only a 120mm slot in the front and one 90mm in the back.

I've also installed a rx 570, so how high of a priority should the case upgrade be?

For your needs, either would do the job just fine - but if you're comparing at very similar money, the 2600 should be a no-brainer.

For the differences between the RAM speed, it'll vary game to game. Generally, looking in the ~5FPS range for averages.... but the 1% lows are generally improved by a substantial margin, making for a smoother experience.

With a 2400MHz kit, you might be able to OC it to 2666-2800MHz, and I'd suggest trying to do so. There's just no guarantees though. Generally, if a kit could do higher speeds, it would've been clocked/sold as a higher kit.

With the case, it really depends on temperatures. While a single 120mm intake & 90mm exhaust sounds pretty weak, if your case is fairly open in terms of airflow, it might be fine.
How are your 570 temps currently?

There is just a side vent for airflow.

After closing a game speccy reports ~70 degrees on the gpu

2600 over the i3. 100%
