Overclocking @ 124MHz FSB fried the GPU

I would like to ask if overclocking my CPU could damage my video card. I have a Piii 800 512 megs of RAM. Giga-byte 6vm7-4E motherboard with Apollo Pro 133 chipset. I have a Hercules 3d Prophet II Ultra video card. Is it possible to fry the GPU since extra voltage is sent to the AGP slot and the frequency of BUS operation to the AGP slot changes from 66MHz to 83MHz when adjusting the BUS from 100MHz to 124MHz?

You should have gone with the 700E so you could take it to 133, where the system will jump your AGP and PCI speed back to stock due to implementing a different divisor. Having said that, try it 1 step at a time, you can actually SEE video problems, so if they come up, back it down.

I'm not sure about the Gigabyte mobo. On an Asus mobo over 120FSB the divider increases from 1/3 to 1/4 ratio.

This means at 124 FSB you are actually underclocked by 7%. I don't know what this means for Gigabyte boards though.

Also - why do you think extra voltage would be sent to the AGP?

THe card was definitely fried @124MHz fsb coz I put it in a stock PIII dell and after 3 minutes in windows I had birdshit like graphics yellow in color all over the place. Took it back to the shop and they tested. It had the same problem in a third computer. They replaced it for me and now I'm afraid to overclock. The funny thing is that I played NBA Live 2001 for over an hour until the problem arose. The frame rate difference between 800MHz and 998 was nominal. I just want to toss the MB and Intel into the toilet bowl and buy a fukking thunderbird!

Well, you got it changed, which is a good thing.

Grizley1 mentioned that he burned 50% of his GTS memory overclocking... maybe you had a similar problem?

I wouldn't blame the manuf, you made the choice to run out of spec.

You can fry a gpu just as easily with a t-bird setup. It's funny how people think the t-birds are bad about heat. I know a couple of people in the local penitentiary (read:dorms) that fried a MX card. One guy put the jumper on the mobo to test, which brings the vio up to 3.7+ volts. It didn't smoke though, or explode, so there's a good thing.....

I'm not sure about killing your card with an overclocked agp/pci bus, but you'll do it fairly well overclocking the card to it's limits (i.e. anything over 3.3V on your vio). As soon as you see any artifacts (white dots, missing pixels on text, etc.), clock it down a bit and check again.

Maybe I did overclock the GPU too far. I've never seen anything like it. Never had any problems with my TNT Ultra

That's true that I ran it out of spec. I should have done more homework on processors beofore I made the purchase. I should have gone with a 700E. If I try 133MHz FSB it won't even go into Windows coz the multiplyer is 8.
