Hey all,

I have overclocked my i7 4770k to 4.5ghz at 1.2v everything is stable but the temps have topped at 88 degrees under heavy load.

Is this to much ??

The highest temp you should have is 70C(65C Recommended). Anything higher will damage your CPU.

This generation of Intel CPUs can run a lot hotter than previous ones. Intel gives 105C as the max temp before it starts throttling. Seeing 80-90C will make a lot of people look twice, but it's not uncommon.

Having said that, it wouldn't be a bad idea to try bringing the temps down into the 70s if possible. What kind of CPU cooler/case airflow do you have?

edit: looking back, saw the Silverstone CPU cooler, which isn't bad. There are better ones out there at the very high end, or there's always water cooling, but I don't know if it's worth it in your situation. Simplest thing first: Take a look at the airflow and case fan situation ... if they're the stock ones that came with the case, or if the case has limited airflow, those are two possible places to start. Each one could bring the temps down by a few degrees if they're not ideal now.

Can you remove the overclock, play at stock speeds for a while, and report back that max temp.

That cooler should be able to handle a lot of heat with relative ease, if installed correctly. Returning to stock speeds and having high temps would likely mean the installation isn't making good thermal contact between the CPU and heatsink (likely too much or too little thermal paste). If stock temps are good then you likely have tried for too high of an overclock.

FYI - doesn't matter if 5 of your friends all have 4770K's at 4.5GHz and run prime95 stress tests at 70C - each CPU is different and some just work better (faster/cooler) than others.

I've gone down to 4.3ghz at 1.179 volts will try this first and see max temps then remove overclock and see what the difference is.

Temps have gone down at idle/low load by around 5 degrees

45-46 degrees

Temps are almost the same at stock ...

between 45 and 49 degrees at idle/low load which seems quite high.

I have ordered some thermal paste remover and some air canisters hopefully that will help .
