So i just built my new system and got it going 2 days ago. I was just wondering if I should wait a while and let things sort of "settle in" before i start trying to OC.

I am planning on using AMD overdrive at first because i have never done any overclocking before.
any advice is greatly appreciated!

Speccs:
MSI 970 gaming mobo
FX 8320
h100i water cooler
MSI GTX 970 gaming graphics card
8gb EVGA 2400mhz ram
h440 case

I don't think there's any reason to wait, so long as you've got all your drivers and windows updates set. You don't want windows to be loading updates while you're in the middle of overclocking.

i have clocked that same chip (FX-8320) nicely to 4,2ghz and i dont see any point going any further. I dont really recommend using any automatic overclocking softwares because they have this habit of putting more voltages than are required. Also some cases they touch the bus clock speed which is absolutely not good way to overclock nowdays. as for the 970 comes i have oc'd my 970 strix SLI and what i have learned that all 970's overclock very nicely to +150-200mhz but in this case i wouldnt recommend touching any voltages in gpu either.

Interesting! I would have thought using the AMD software would be much safer than trying to figure it out myself. Also, I don't plan on touching the GTX 970 as far as OCing goes, its plenty enough beast for me!

I already built the system and went with the 8320, so suggesting that i go and buy an i5 or i7 is not very helpful... also they too will be out of date in about a month when skylake processors are out so there really is no point in it to me.

And i also OC'd to 4.5ghz on the stock voltage and even the performance gains on 3Dmark11 were negligible. I think im just going to stay stock.
