overclocking a Q6600 (core 2 quad at 2.4 ghz)

So I have a core 2 quad that I want to overclock but unfortunately I have an hp pavilion I hi jacked from my family and have upgraded it quite substantially, but the cpu is locked so I can't do crap in the bios. I heard that there is a forced hardware overclock where I use a piece of tape to force the cpu's clock speed and fsb to run faster. Keep in mind I am good with computers but not as knowledgeable as the lot of you guys here. Is there anything I can do to overclock my cpu other than the forced hardware OC? If there isn't and I would need to do a forced hardware OC is it safe to do or kinda sketchy? I would upgrade to a faster core 2 quad but cpu's that fit into an LGA 775 are expensive as hell

I've never heard of an OC as you described, that's not to say it doesn't exist
You could try clockgen or setfsb and OC through windows,but I believe it's not that stable.
Obvisouly the best way is through the bios, but you can't do that. What mobo is it?
Pity though, the q6600 is still a decent chip (no means top end, or anywhere near, but still capable), and it's easily overclockable with the right mobo. Any 750i/780i/P35/P45 mobo would be great to OC that Q6600 or, maybe you can pick one of those up cheap as opposed to a new cpu.

I think where ever you heard about using a piece of tape to overclock your system was just screwing with you. The last CPUs to have any type of overclocking through physical modification was the original Athlon series. Information about this - http://www.motherboards.org/articles/guides/41_1.html

On to overclocking your system..

About the only way to OC your system would be via software. The best that I am aware of is setFSB.

Going this route you will need to find out what chipset/motherboard you have and hope for the best. It is not stable, at all. The best OC you will likely get is likely going to be 2.6 - 2.8 Ghz. You will have to play around with it. Be warned, going past a stable clock will immediately freeze your system. You will have to power cycle the system if that happens.

In all honesty, the overclock you may get will likely be so insignificant that it may not be worth messing with. You could find a good X48 motherboard that all of your components will fit in, get a good cpu cooler and then OC the crap out of your Q6600.

I have tried the mod with the tape. It increases the speed, but on the 2 CPU s I tried it on they are unstable and essentially non functioning.. I no longer have the info on the mod, or I would send it to you.
I have several Q6600 CPU's tried to overclock them on several MB's. It is like flogging a dead horse, you may get fro 2.4 MHZ to 2.6 MHZ but the CPU will not run stable at any level of overclocking that is worthwhile.

well there are instructions on how to perform the mod right here? Is it worth trying? And why do older processors cost so much? One would think it'd be cheaper

CPUZ will only show you what speed your system is running at, voltages and other hardware information. It has no benchmarking or stress testing features at all.

For keeping track of CPU temps and things most people use one of these -

As for pricing on older CPUs .. Well, it's all supply and demand. They are no longer being produced so that makes a finite number of them available. Many came in pre-built systems and most people do not part out an old computer. They will either keep it, give it away or trash it. People/businesses know that if you need one of these CPUs that you will accept the price since it will be cheaper than a new system.

From the looks of that tape mod thread you posted, all it does is change your FSB from 1066 to 1333. I would make sure that you have memory that will support the higher speeds before you attempt it.

Thanks. Well it seems my best bet is to find a processor that fits into an LGA 775 socket that I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for lol
