Overclocking an i5 3750K

Hello,

I know there must be several threads like this, but I thought it woould be easier to make another

PC Specs:

i5 3750K at stock , I think
Asus P8Z77 V- LX Mobo
Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM at 1600mhz
EVGA 670 FTW Sig II
Corsiar TX750W PSU
1TB WD Blaack Caviar HDD

Mabye getting a SSD of some kind , 120GB .


Question: Will ovcerclcoking my CPU ) or even my GPU or RAM ) make a noticeable difference in gaming or day to day tasks.

Games I play : Batman AC , GTA IV , Sants Row the Third, Metro 2033 , Just Cause 2, Trine 2 , AC3 etc

Other tasks include Word, Publisher, Photoshop and editing in Vegas.

ATM , my CPU runs at 30-35 C at idle and goes over 45 when gaming . so I dont know if I should get a better CPU cooler , sort of in anticipation of OCing.

I don't really see any "problems" in my computer , but in its highest settings, Batman stutters and FPS ranges between 20 and 60. Other games so far have been pretty much locked 60FPS

Cooling ideas : CM Hyper 212 Evo for around £25 . I may also look into replacing the exhaust fan on my case and getting some top fans too.

It may help in some things, but your games are mostly GPU-bound, and you have a very nice graphics card. You probably won't see much benefit from it, but a mild overclock is easy enough, if you want to do it. I don't see any reason for you to go beyond 4.0GHz, which is easily done.

Every time you increase your Clock by .1 Ghz your CPU become about 3-4% faster while doing pretty much everything. So if you increase it .5Ghz then it'll be 15-20% faster. If you increase 1.0 Ghz it'll be 30-40% faster. To me overclocking is VERY useful. I like to run benchmarks and I can certainly tell when I'm video editing, image rendering, converting audio files, streaming, and I can tell a little in gaming. So if your doing any of those thing I listed it will help you about 3% per .1Ghz. And that 3% does add up pretty quickly. While using Cinebench my score went up from 6.06 to 8.01. That's a 20% increase. So something that would normally take 4 hours will now take only 3. That's a big time savings to me.

Also overclocking your GPU will really help you in games. Sometimes you can see a 5Fps increase. And when your only getting 25Fps to start with, jumping up to 30 really helps. Overclocking RAM doesn't help too much in the real world. But when I increased my RAM from 1600 to 2133 my Cinebench score jumped up about 5% and my Passmark score went from 9300 to 9700 for my CPU. So it does help some. Everything helps. And my Cinebench score from overclocking actually went up abou 25-30% not 20%, let me correct that.

the 212 EVO is a great investment because an OC of 600mhz to 4.0 would yield some performance increase when translated to FPS, especially when added to a moderate gpu OC. the cooling difference between stock 3570k cooler and the 212 evo is astronomical. i'd definitely recommend that at the very least, as i personally have the 3570k and used to use the 212 EVO and i could overclock up to 4.3 - 4.4 with VERY VERY SAFE temperatures.
