So.. overclocking is a topic i've not done too much research on as i never really felt the need to but now im curious

i have an i5 7640X and its well.. a temporary placeholder till i can afford an i7 or i9 at a later date
im wondering what things i need to change for an overclock as i know its not just as simple as changing a core ratio.. or is it?

every page i find has mixed answers with people using voltages that seem silly like 1.5V and others just not making much sense
the top thread i found suggested a 5.1GHz core ratio with 1.35V but i haven't a clue if thats safe or dangerous to the chip

my relevant specs should be sufficient to handle overclocking

ASUS ROG RAMPAGE VI EXTREME x299
Corsair HX1200i PSU
Corsair H80i cooler

Fortunately you got a good chip, you should be able to hit 5.1-5.2GHz. According to reviewers, the X299 version of the Core i5 should be able to clock slightly higher than the regular LGA 1151 variant.

Absolute max for Kaby Lake and Kaby Lake X parts should be 1.4v. But 1.35 is around average.
