Hi all.
I have question that's been bugging for the last few days. For which I cannot find the answer to.
I havery just bought a 2nd stick of identical RAM so I can benefit from dual channel memory.
Crucial 8GB DDR3-1600 UDIMM CT102464BA160B CL11
The reason why is because I have an AMD A8-7650K with R7 series APU and I've read he fader the RAM frequency the better the iGPU performance.

MSI A68HM-E33 V2 Motherboard.

I know the motherboard supports up to 2133mhz but all I want is to be able to overclock the RAM from 1600MHZ to 1833MHZ.

My question is: can this, what would be considered value RAM (no fancy heatsink, just green chip with mem blocks) be overclocked?

Considering it is Crucial RAM and not some obscure brand. I also read most good brands of value RAM can at least be overclocked 1 step up.
Has anyone had this experience or may simply know?
Thanks in advance for your help. I know it's a budget gaming pc but this is all I can afford for now so buying Ballistix at 1833MHZ OR 2066MHZ is simply not an option for me.
Thanks again and happy o'clocking!
Jo

Solution
it can probably be overclocked.
It is definitely worth a try
just depends on luck how far you can overclock it
Here is my memory overclocking experience so far
I have some cheap value RAM overclocked from 1333 to 1445Mhz at 1.57V (Bclk increase),
and some crucial ballistix elite overclocked from 1600 to 1790 also at 1.57V (also Bclk increase)
and some crucial ballistix tactical overclocked from 1833 to 2000 at stock voltage (memory multiplier increase)
and some crucial ballistix tactical which would not go any faster than stock speed of 1600

I have never had memory get hot. Apparently fancy "heat spreaders" are 90% marketing bullsh*t

Solution
Firstly. Thanks for your incredibly fast reply!
That's I needed to hear so... Much appreciated!
I guess the only thing to do now is give it a go.
The 2nd stick should arrive by the weekend and I'll tweak it to see what I get.
Fingers crossed I'll be able to hit my target 1833mhz.
Will post results when I get them for the community.
Once again, really grateful you took the time to share your own experiences. Gave me the confidence to give it a go!
Cheers for that!

(I agree on the about the heat spreaders, probably get better heat dissipation by opening a window heheh)

OMG!
So I took delivery of my 2nd 8Gb stick of RAM.
I did a benchmark test on Total War: Rome 2 - Medium settings.

SETUP 1:
1Gb stick at 1600Mhz with the iGPU left at 1024Mb
===26.0 FPS (average)===

SETUP 2:
2 Gb sticks at 1600Mhz with iGPU in "Dual Graphics" Mode (not 2nd GPU) to trick it so I can upgrade to 2048Mb
===44.8 FPS (average)===

SETUP 3:
Finally, the only thing I changed from SETUP 2 was overclocking the RAM from 1600Mhz to 1833Mhz
===49.4 FPS (average)===

Now I have another question... :)

In the MSI BIOS it gave me the option to up the RAM up to 2400Mhz but I read somewhere that this CPU (AMD A8-7650K) only goes up to 2133Mhz.

Is that true or is the only way to find out, to just overclock the shizz out of this thing?
Also on the one hand it's Value RAM, no fancy heatspreader (overrated as previously discussed) but would I run the risk of overheating if I went to 2400Mhz?

Bear in mind I haven't TOUCHED the CL timings at all, and the are pretty high, is it worth changing them?
I'm at:
FSB😀RAM - 3:28
CL - 13
tRCD - 11
tRP - 11
tRAS - 28
tRC - 45
Any recommended CL timings for 1833Mhz or even 2133Mhz/2400Mhz? (I did "Link" my RAM in BIOS but don't know if it makes a difference as both sticks had the exact same timings.

Just providing you with the results of my test as I notice so many people as questions, get answers but never rarely post their results.

Hope someone can answer my additional questions.

Thank you @lodders for your reply again!

Cheers

Jo
