Overclocking both CPU and Ram ... ???

Hi,

I successfully overclocked my AMD Barton XP 2500+ to 3200+ (2.2Ghz). I'm using 200FSB X 11 multi setting with 1.7 Vcore. (The CPU temp is roughly around 50C.) Now, i'm trying to overclock my OCZ PC3200 Plantinum 512MB EB DDR Ram. Right now, its clock freq. is the same as cpu FSB, which is 200Mhz. Now, I increased dimm voltage to 2.7 (from 2.6) and changed mem freq. to 240Mhz. The system just refused to boot up ... i had to hard-reset CMOS. (i relaxed timing too ... 10/4/4/3.)

Is it possible to overclock this memory? (or rather is it beneficial to have it overclocked? ... i'm thinking it might be better to have 200Mhz mem freq. which is the same as CPU FSB.) I tried to change CL from 2.5 to 2 and it also caused the system being unable to boot up. (just left mem. freq. to 200Mhz for changing timing.)

Also, i'm suspecting that if you overclock your cpu, it's hard to overclock you memory. (comparing with when you don't overclock the cpu.)

and, i'm using Asus nforce2 deluxe motherboard ... for some reasons unknown to me, it doesn't let me specify the mem. frequency ... just percentage of mem freq. so the only option i have for overclocking 200Mhz mem freq. is to overclock it to 240Mhz (which is 120%).

Any tips? suggestions?

thanks

DooD, you want to stay at 1:1 here. As you raise the memory buss your CPU must follow. If you get to 210mhz without cranking your Vcore, feel lucky.

Thanks for the info.

I played Doom3 with the above setting and at one point, the game crashed to windows with some error message. This never happened before ... I lowered FSB to 190 and Doom3 runs fine now. However, I noticed that my cpu temp. was 61-62C when i played the game ... do you think the temp. is a bit high?

Also, is it possible to lower memory timing with this setting? Lowering CAS latency tends to make the system unable to boot up. (2.5->2) I'm wondering if i have to increase dimm voltage? (even though i'm not changing mem clock speed.)

That's about right for a stock cooler. you want your Vdimm at 2.7v or 2.8v. Nothing wrong with CAS 2.5 if your memory won't handle CAS 2. The last 2500+ I did I had to stop at a 195mhz buss because of heat too. Make sure you give that CPU 1.7v Vcore, and see what happens. Your temps aren't bad.
