Hi all!

I'm building a system for a buddy of mine. I currently have a C2D E6300 running at 3GHz and use the Asus P5W mobo.

He wants to spend more and get some good stuff. So I was thinking of building him this for overclocking.

Asus P5B DLX
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
XFX PVT80FSHF9 GeForce 8800GTX 768MB
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz

I have not chose cooling yet.

Will any of this hamper his overclocking? Will the P5B's Intel P965 slow him down or hamper any of his higher end hardware? Should I go for the Intel 975X?

Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Thank you all!

Yead i'd grab the DS3 instead, but meh your choice.

Also get RAM with some nice 4-4-4-12 timings :)

And as for the GTX - make sure your PSU can handle it.

The Gigabyte DS3 is the best eh? He really does not need a feature rich mobo he just needs to freakying overclock. He does not need damn built in wireless and all that jaz. Those darn Asus boreds come with so much that you have to pay for.

Sounds good, which G.Skill ram you are looking at and what PSU are you looking at!

The P5b-Dlx is a really good board, most of the feature are usefull IMO

This is the power supply I'm going to use, it should do well with the 8800 GPU.

This is the G.Skill Ram I'm looking at getting will this ram be good for overclocking....?

Also does anyone have any input on this PSU? I do not plan to use it in this build but have been looking at it and was wondering if this brand is any good....

Thank you all for your input! 😀

What's wrong with the P5W? Or are you going to keep the current system together and build a second one?

Yeah I'm building a second system for my buddy. He does not need the features of the P5w. The DS3 is cheaper and just as good at overclocking.....

ive got that psu at the mo and il be getting that G.Skill ram for my build as well, imo very good choices

the ocz gameXstream is a very well known and solid psu, good quality stuff

and the ram looks to have alot of overclocking potential, no probs getting
> 1000mhz cl4 D9*** doesnt get much better than that

neemers, your 1. choice of G'Skill memory:
is cheaper because it uses Promos chip instead of the the high quality Micron D9 chip (even though it runs at the same timings 4-4-4-12 as the more expensive). Look at the manufacturer model type on the newegg link: it says F2-6400CL4S-1GBPK
The 2. choice does. The manufacturer model type is F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ. This one uses Micron D9 chip, which enables you to go way beyond DDR2-800 (I guess it may go as high as DDR2-1066 with appropriate voltage)

I was wondering what the difference in this brand would be? It says they are for Intel platform. Does anyone know why or how it differs in that way? Just curious....

Hmm, good point. No, I don't know why this is "For Intel platform only" or what that actually means. As far as I know, they're just DDR2 memory like other and there are no specific requirements for DDR2 on Intel platform except JEDEC standards. But this memory uses Elpida chip, not Promos.
