Overclocking CPU in Windows

I am wondering if there is such software that will allow me to over clock my CPU through windows, as I am not able to do so in the bios because my motherboard doesn't allow it. I'm mainly doing this because I believe there is a bottleneck between my video card and processor.

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.0Ghz w/ Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler
4Gb Dual Channel 800Mhz Ram
Intel DG43GT Motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 460 1Gb

If Intel doesn't offer such a Windows-based tool, then I doubt you will be able to overclock it. The newer X58 series MBs do offer a Intel Desktop Control Center which supports overclocking the newer MBs like the DX58SO in Windows.

An E8400 at stock should not bottleneck a single GTX460, or if so just a tiny bit like 1 or 2%.

Its an Intel board and most of the older Intel boards had those settings locked.

Just a shot in the dark here, but what about PLL overclocking? Haven't done it in a long time, but as far as I know it should still work...

Will that change the core speed or just the FSB. Or am I missing something entirely

The FSB and clock speed are linked in Core2 processors. An E8400 is 333FSB times a 9x multiplier for 3 ghz. I overclocked mine ( In BIOS) to 450FSB times the 9x multiplier to get 4.050ghz.

so what number would I have to get in order to set the speed to 3.80Ghz ? ( I've heard that is the sweet spot for E8400's ). Also, will my cooler be enough?

3.6 is really the E8400s sweet spot. It will generally go there with no voltage increase. That translates to 400mhz FSB.

Ok thanks, and this can be done in setFSB? As I don't have the option to do it in my bios settings. And still concerned if my cooler will be able to compensate. Idle 34C and max 47C.

Those temps are fine. MAYBE it can be done with SetFSB. Only way to know is to try.

I have an Intel 955XCS that allows for dummy overclocking

Bios > Advanced > Chipset Configuration > Default Configuration Override > Do you wish to continue [ Yes ] > Host Burn In Mode Percentage [0]
I wouldn't advise any more than 20%

Well I went into my Bios and could only get as far as Advanced Chipset Configuration, there was no option for Default Configuration Override.

Stuck trying it with software then. Still don't forget you have no bottlenecking at all.

Im not quite sure of that, I just have odd spikes of fps drop in games like Mafia 2 and Metro 2033. So I dont know what else the problem could be. And yes I realize these are both very demanding games but a 460 1Gb stock clocks running at 1920x1080 should have no trouble with say high settings and no aa/af/vsync.

Those are very demanding games that can make use of and really need a quad to max out. If you had a P45 board you could take it to 4 ghz and have no problems. As is you might want to save up for a platform upgrade.

That is not a bottleneck....something limiting something else, that is just an older ( still decent ) CPU with modern games that need more power.
