My GPU is a GTX 670 4gb FTW and it is getting bottlenecked by my CPU (It is from 2011) So I was wonder if it would be safe to overclock my CPU up to 3.5 or 3.6 to see if that will stop the bottleneck since a FX 6300 doesn't bottleneck this GPU in most games. My CPU Idles at about 17 degrees C, and got to a max of 53 degrees when running Prime 95.
Thanks

Solution
Not very much, try it and see.
It's pretty much impossible to fry a cpu nowadays unless you just change random numbers to the max, CPUs shut off when they get too hot so you won't fry it.
Download prime95, HWmonitor, look at some overclocking guides, then go into the bios and overclock. Check the cpu temps before and after overclocking with HWmonitor (after running prime95 for a few mins), and then look up whether it's okay for your cpu to be at that temperature under load. You then want to leave prime95 running for around an hour to check whether the overclock is stable, if it's not, dial back the overclock a little and try again.
An fx 6100 is not just the fx 6300 at a lower clockspeed, there are other differences two and you can't match them by overclocking.
Anyway, how cold is your room? 17c is very cold for a cpu, no air cooler would be able to get sub ambient temperatures.
Back to the main question, you probably can overclock, though I wouldn't recommend it, if you can get it stable and not too hot then sure, go ahead, but it's going to be an overall better idea to get a cooler like the hyper 212 instead and overclock with that.

The room should be around 19 degrees C with multiple fans. The reason I want to find a no expense solution is because I have two PCs, and I just bought a second GPU for my other PC. So how much would overclocking by .3 ghz most likely increase in heat? I definitely don't want to fry it.

So I overclocked to 3.9 and it is more stable in Metro now (I'll have to test more games tomorrow) but when I run Prime95 it gets to 62 C on the core (Which should be alright) and 75 C on the 3rd motherboard temp for HWMonitor. So is that safe?
Thanks for all the help, you guys saved me $40 on a cooler, and $120 on a CPU!
