Overclocking E8400

Hi, wanting to overlcock my E8400, to 3.6ghz i was told this could be done with no voltage increase?
Well i tried but everytime i do it, it just boots but without the settings i wanted to use.

I did notice the stock voltages were low tho... isnt 0.95 low ?
Well i have tried to do it with 1.000v and others like 1.025v etc but it hasnt worked so far hmm.
Help? I dont wanna fry it 😛
I didnt think anything below 1.2 could fry it but hey i dont know alot.

All i have done is changed the Memory Multiplier to 2
pci xpress 100
cpu host frequency 400mhz
400x9=3.6ghz! 😀##

I have a similar line of questions since I have an 8400 with the xigmatek 1283, but when I tried to go to 3.6 my idle temp was over 50C. I'm sort of thinking I might have messed up the HS installation somehow...

ALSO what is good temps? i have realtemp but i dunno what is too high etc.

anything above 70 degrees is bad. I would reseat the heatsink.

You are safe as long as you keep your voltage below 1.4

I have an e8400 oc'd to 3.6ghz and I have the voltage set to 1.19. I had it set a few .125 increments lower but had very rare reboots. My temps are fantastic as I have a Zalman cooler. Idle temp right now is 26 degrees. I have the Intel version of the Cool n Quiet on though. I haven't seen temps ever go above 40 degrees.

Anyways, hope that voltage helps. You might be able to start a little lower but I had very rare problems but am very very stable where it is now.

26c idle @ 3.6 means like 20c ambient or less

Kpo6969 I have the e8400 and the xigmatek 1283 with the fan on max. I don't ever get temps as good as that. Then again my heatsink never seems to take the heat away, I can touch the heatpipes or fins after running full load and it won't burn or anything.

Ok so i need to up the voltage, it comes up with SYSTEM VOLTAGE NOT OPTIMIZED what gives?

Ill set the volage to 1.19 and see how things go report back,

BTW i got a Gigabyte P35 D3SL motherboard

Ok well got the overclocking going im testing now just looking at temps its not hitting 67 - 70 while doing prime tests, 🙁 Meh too high??

Imagine while playing crysis god it would blow.

My maximum stable overclock for my E8400 is 3.78Ghz @ 1.36v so not all chips are capable of very high stable overclocks and yes you need more voltage.

Ok ill try 1.2, im kinda gtin the hang of it understand it abit more it takes more time than you think, im very worried abbout the temps tho, i know prime tests push ur CPU alot so would it ever get tht hot (65 - 75 ) while playing games like crysis or cod4?

It was very hot yesterday tho, and my case isnt the best either, ill soon get a antec 900 and a new cpu cooler.

Keep an eye on you NB voltage as well because I left mine on auto and my board over volted it quite a bit so I had to manually set it to keep it in line.

I'm actually testing it at 3.825 1.38v right now and it's looking good.

I have the same mobo\CPU as you and I have ran at a stable 3.6ghz with a very minimal voltage increase. I highly recommend an aftermarket cooler... you can easily bring it to 4.0ghz without making it sweat.

Do you have CPU-Z? What is the voltage at idle? and when you are running a stress test (orthos, prime95 etc)?

For my current 4.0ghz OC I have cpu voltage set to 1.3625 in BIOS; this is 24hour Orthos stable. If I go any lower with vcore I get an orthos error within 5 hours. CPU-Z reads 1.28v load and 1.30v idle. The hottest the cores reached during a 24hour small fft orthos test is 54C:56C (realtemp).

I was nearly hitting 80 degress with 3.6ghz OC so ill wait till i buy a aftermarket cooler, and here in england its been very hot lately, so that doesnt help.

80C is pretty hot dude, I would definitely back it off a bit and look into an aftermarket cooler asap.

Increasing your FSB, that will do 2 things; increase the clock speed of your CPU (depending on cpu multiplier used) and increase the speed at which your memory is running.

Example, my current setup:

FSB: 445
CPU Multiplier: 9
Mem Multiplier: 2.0

CPU Mhz = 4005 (445 x 9)
Mem Mhz = 890 (445 x 2)

As you can see, increasing FSB increases both how fast the CPU is running and how fast memory is running. If you prefer to have a high FSB but do not want a drastic CPU OC you can lower your CPU multiplier down a number thus reducing CPU mhz while maintaining a high FSB and memory OC.

Again, suppose you want my above OC for memory but don't want your CPU at 4.0ghz.

FSB: 445 (same)
CPU Multiplier: 8 (reduced to 8 from 9)
Mem Multiplier: 2 (same)

CPU Mhz: 3560 (445 x 8)
Mem Mhz: 890 (445 x 2)

My memory is PC6400 (rated @ 800mhz), so i have a memory OC of 90mhz. Not all memory can handle drastic OC. From what I've read, if you bought memory with tighter timings (4-4-4-12 or lower) then it can't handle much increase in FSB past its rated value; higher quality memory can probably get away with more than cheap memory can. Whereas if you purchased memory with looser timings (6-6-6-18) then you can get away with increasing the memory speed more.

You should also check that none of your other settings are on Auto. While changing settings for your OC you can inherently increase the speed of a component that you did not intend to.

I'm no pro by any means, I am also fairly new to OC'ing. The above is info I have gathered from ready many articles\how-to's. If I made any mistakes, feel free to chime in.
