Overclocking epic fails

I'm a noob and I would like to share my story with you.

So I bought a FX-8350 to replace my Phenom 965. Tried to overclock it with my trusty 212 and realized I needed a better cooler. So I settled on a Noctua D-14 and that's where all my fun began.

1- I decided that reading instruction was for pussies and instead decided that watching a YouTube install video would be good enough.

2- Installed the Noctua D-14 exactly like in the video.

3- Didn't realize that the guy in the video installed his Noctua backwards with both fans blowing into the case instead of toward the rear exhaust fan.........

4- Tried to overclock the damn thing and failed miserably. Temps were crazy.

5- Instead of finally reading the instructions, I watched a couple more times the video and made sure I was installing the cooler exactly like him.

6- Reapplied TIM, reinstalled the Noctua backward and failed again.

7- Installed four additional fans to my case to improve airflow. Got to 4.2! Temps were still far too high (close to Max) since I was running at 1.312V.

8- Started to realize something was wrong....still didn't read the instructions.....

9- Stumbled on a picture of some rig with the Noctua that was installed properly and thought "look at this noob, he installed it backwards......wait a minute........." Read the instructions and thought "......................oh..............".

10- Installed the Noctua properly. Overclocked my FX-8350. Got to 4.5 stable quickly. Currently testing 4.6 and temps are looking good.

So yeah.....I'm a dumb noob and I deserve all the laughs. I learned the hard (read : dumb) way.

Thank you for reading!

Well, I wasn't overclocking - but last time I drained and refilled my loop, I forgot to plug the pump in again after testing - so when I started using my PC again I found my temps started rapidly climbing - at idle my CPU was 45C, and my GPU was 80C!

Took me around 2 hours of rebooting, checking for air locks, and tightening water blocks before I realised what I'd done, and even then it was only because I decided to hook the pump back up to my test PSU to test again, and saw that I'd left it unplugged!

Felt like a right pillock.
My first overclock.........

I had a unlocked amd phenom II 975
I wanted to overclock that thing and bought a liquid cooler form a store
Installed the good way overcloked the cpu until 4.6 ghz
Had made a cup of tea come back to my room and there was smoke coming out of my PC......🙁
checked everything....
Realized that there was a bottle of liquid in the box to fill up the cooler.......
Never install a cooler without checking it....

Well not quite as good but when I bought my cm 212+ the fan was already mounted to the brackets so I popped it on and plugged it in.

I couldn't figure out why prime was getting my cpu @ 3.8 up to 83C so I freaked out

pulled the entire thing off and reapplied thermal paste and mounted a pull fan because I figured maybe 3.8 was just to high for the chip.

This made no difference at all it almost seemed worse as it hit the same temps but got there faster then wen removing the pull fan I felt the push fan blowing onto my arm.

I thought wait now thats not right, yeah as it turns out the brackets were mounted on the fan backwards in the factory or the thing was previously used. Either way it was a total gongshow of me swearing and my X telling me to take it easy and relax which of course made me more upset.

Lol these are great! Can't say I have had anything this epic (im an ocd anal retentive sob) but I can say this -

No noob figures this stuff out. You went back, learned from the mistake, set ego aside. That's far better than a noob. Yoy had a newbie moment. But I doubt it will repeat. Good on ya!
