Overclocking failure: CPU or memory?

Overclocked 20%: from 3400 to 4000. When running 3DMark the system goes to desktop. It does not hang.
Default fan and default voltage. Only FSB increase.

Intel Pentium 4 650 (3.4 GHz)
Asus P5AD2-E Premium Intel 925XE
Samsung DDR2-533 512 MB
Asus X800XL

CPU Temperature is about 60·C - 149· F. About 3-4·C more than default.
(it´s very hot now in my place - 30·C)
Case with 12" front and back fans.

Hmm does sound like CPU, RAM would cause bigger f-ups.

Could increase the juice to the CPU to resolve this but really those CPU temps are a bit high, using a Prescott huh...

temps - my northwood c 2600 overclocked to a tiny 2800 (max 3.125ghz - crap batch and DDR400 stopping me) on an Albatron i865 board hit 69ºc for an hour or so in the middle of summer (~35ºc outside) while video encoding - thats with stock cooling and cheap thermal paste - later that week i got some arctic silver 5 to knock the temps down a little.

Anyhow - the northwoods seem to survive above 65ºc without reseting or nothing so id say your temps (if correctly read) are not an issue, but throttling could cover issues like that, and if thats with stock cooling thats crazy, and also check the ram ratio's and pci/agp lock and up the vcore a little.

First, it would help if you would be a bit more detailed. Which 3DMark?

Secondly, doesnt the problem stand out here? Your temps are way to hot. 60c on the CPU and I bet you havent even checked nor cooled the NB. If your at 60c do you realize how hot the CPU gets the second that the benchmark begins? At least another 20c which would put you at 90C. If your not going to cool the system properly, then you shouldnt be OVERCLOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!

If your not going to cool the system properly, then you shouldnt be OVERCLOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!

**ROFL** There is <i>that</i>. They have enough problems not overheating at stock speeds with the stock cooler as it is. :O

- When the benchmarking stops and the system goes to desktop, the temperature of the CPU is about 65ºC. Just then. (Asus Probe).

I understand that, but what im trying to get you to understand is that the temps before and after arent the problem. That benchmark stress the system hard and increases the heat around 15 - 20c. So when your actually running the program your around 85c.
