Overclocking higher

Hey guys, I haven't been on recently because I went to camp for a week so there's no wifi in the woods...lol
So don't worry I didn't forget about you guys...i didn't die either...lol
I just wanted to overclock higher like 3.8 - 4.0Ghz...yes I have just been wondering about how to mess with the north bridge correctly...what voltage setting do I change and by how much?...I'm worried about frying the north bridge because it runs pretty hot, I can burn my finger if I touch the nb heat sink and hold my finger there for a minute...
I just want a little help on overclocking to the high speeds...and I would appreciate experienced people like overshocked or OvrClkr to help me with this...anybody who knows how to overclock to high speeds safely...

I've got the cheapest 945 nb oced from 200 to 266 and its heat sink is extremely hot. Voltage is +0.3V. It's max oc for this nb and its been working like this for a year now. I would worry about this.
 


Yeah man, wich mobo?

I replaced the stock heatsinks on my mobo with custom and it lowered my temps like 30c. The mod i did involved a intel stock heatsink for the NB. If you want to save time and would rather spend the money go for the thermalright hr-05. it will lower the temps signifigantly.

So im spending a decent amount of money to replace it with a rampage extreme and im going to get a bunch of new coolers for it. Im also getting a ln2 pot for my NB. And my cpu ln2 pot arrived in the mail a few days ago although i havnt gotton around to testing it yet because as soon as i got home with the DICE to bench with i noticed that my mobo was dead so im waiting for a new mobo to arrive. Then expect some kickass results!
 
And there's a good chance that you have simply reached the limit of what your CPU can do. When your up that high, everything matters: your choice of cooler, fans, NB cooling, case.

I have an E5200 that I just cannot get past 3.75 GHz. 🙁 with stability. Of course, my idea of stability is a 24 hour P95 test run. It's built primarily out of recycled parts and that's the best I can do. OTOH, a 50% OC on a cheapy CPU ain't bad.
 
Sorry guys, my mobo is a GA MA770T UD3P and my CPU is the phenom II X2 550 with all cores unlocked. I have a cooler master V8 installed on that CPU...I don't have an aftermarket cooler for the north bridge unfortunately...and I'm sure I haven't reached the limit on that motherboard...thanks
 
I thought those chips had the integrated NB?

I would get an HR-05 NB cooler. It will cool it really nice.

If you dont want to spend $20 on a NB cooler then i would just attach a faster fan to the current heatsink.
 
Yep, i ordered a rampage extreme and am either going to make a pot or just buy one for my NB.

I also have all kinds of crazy heatsinks coming in the mail... I will take tons of pice for you guys.

I plan to do a DICE run the same day i get all my goodies.
 
Today I pushed my system to it's limits! I finally reached 16K! 😀 😛

To remind you of my setup:

CPU - AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE 3.1Ghz stock (unlocked to be a phenom II X4 B50 BE)
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master V8
RAM - G.Skill 4Gb (2 X 2Gb) 1333Mhz
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA MA770T UD3P
Graphics Card - Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850
PSU - Tuniq 650W

Overclock Settings:
CPU: 4Ghz (Mult. X16, Bus 250Mhz, and Voltage 1.52v)
RAM: 1333Mhz
Graphics GPU: 700Mhz
Graphics Memory: 1200Mhz

Note: I noticed that when I added NB CPU voltage the system became less stable so I left it at default.
And the temps were great! never exceeding 62C. (They were actually even lower!!!) :) 😛

hey since righht now my cpu is at 3.92 its a 550 dual core not unlocked, and i wanted to get to 4ghz, right now i just changed the multiplier its at 19.5 now should i lower it and raise the fsb or whatever u wanna call it? Because that also changes the memory speed and other things. Maybe that way i can get it to 4ghz, and my voltage is set to 1.5v but shows as 1.48v and when i ran prime 95 it went up to 1.5 is that normal to be off a lil?

what you think i should do to get up to 4ghz because im thinking if i balance out the multiplier and fsb i think i can get there.

 
huntsman, you can use both the fsb (bus) and the multiplier to overclock to 4Ghz. When I tried going to 4 by just using the multiplier it wouldn't boot, so I set the multiplier to 16 and the fsb to 250 (200 by default), then I lowered the DRAM frequency to maintain my normal RAM speed. The DRAM frequency was set to X6, I set it to X5.33. The voltage for the processor I set to 1.525V (Although it shows 1.52V)

thanks so like right now my ram is at x5.33 at 1066mhz so ur saying i should lower it to 4 or whatever the next number is going down so its at 800mhz and then raise the fsb as it will bring it back up to 1066, and the timings and voltage for ram i should leave them how they are right now set for 1066 right?
 


Yes, leave everything else the same. The fsb will bring up the timings back up to 1066 if you pick it up by 50, but if you put the fsb at something else it won't be 1066 anymore. If you add less than 50 then it will be lower than 1066, but if you add more than 50 it will be higher than 1066. So experiment until you find your sweet spot. Good luck man!
 
or can i push it to 1333 ? but then again it would heat up more, so maybe ill just do like u said bring it down and push the fsb up but i dont think ima set it till 50 cuz im thinking bout having the multiplier on 18 or so because isnt it better to use the multiplier instead of the fsb? im thinkin bout raising the fsb +10 or +20. and how come when you balance the multiplier and fsb you can push it to a farther overclock instead of pushing the multiplier to the max stable setting and then raising the fsb?
 
I don't know...every board and chip is different and work differently...for instance, on my board when I set the CPU voltage to 1.550V it wasn't stable...but at 1.525V it was...(@ 4Ghz) I don't know why the fsb was more stable for me...I will try more, I want to overclock to 4.1 - 4.2Ghz...but we'll see
I want to try overclocking to 4Ghz by using just the multiplier...we'll see what happens...
