Overclocking i5-4690k @ 4.5Ghz

Hey all, I'm trying to get an overclock to 4.5Ghz, however my issue is heat. I can get there but I'm sitting around 87-88C under a full load stress test.

Here's my build list.

Mobo: MSI Z97-Gaming 7
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro Series
Monitor: BenQ GL2760H Black 27" 2ms
GPU: (2) EVGA 04G-P4-2974-KR GeForce GTX 970 4GB ACX 2.0 OC Edition in SLI
Keyboard: RAZER Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth Edition Gaming Elite
Mouse: Logitech G602 Wireless
Headset: Astro A50s
Thermal Paste: Antec Formula 7
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K OC'ed @ 4.0 GHz
CPU Cooler: CORSAIR Hydro Series H105
SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300 240GB
HDD: Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX 1TB
OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1600MHz
PSU: CORSAIR CX series CX750

Now, I have tried voltage at 1.2 @ 4.5Ghz but I crashed booting into windows, I have to go to 1.25v to get a stable 4.5Ghz.

I read all these others achieving this easily, any recommendations? I'm wondering if I didn't put the thermal paste on well enough, thinking about pulling the cooler off and checking, I did the small central dot method.

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.

The small central dot method is inneficient and rarely creates optimal thermal conductivity

I would pull it off, clean it thoroughly with isoprpyl and reapply, using the card method, creating an even, perfect thin layer. I am fairly sure you will see a reduction of a few degrees.

Under full load 80-85 is not dramatic at all.

Thanks for the quick reply, I will try that method out when I get home today. I have read so much about not doing the card method and doing the P dot method. In the past I have not worried about the temp going to 80-85, however when other users are pushing higher voltages and higher clock speeds, I feel as if something is incorrect.

You might want to make sure the pump is working at full speed along with the fan(s) that are on the radiator. Here is a review of the different ways to apply thermal paste, the difference between each isn't all that much though so I wouldn't expect night and day results by changing your paste application unless you really messed it up the first time.

Can I ask yall another question, I was wondering about.... When attaching the backside mount for the cpu cooler, it didn't tighten to the board like I am used to. It actually was 1-2cm loose/free hanging, but when tightening the actually cooler down it seem to pull the back into place.

Your pump is probably connected to one of the fan headers on your motherboard, go into your bios and verify that the fan speed on those headers is turned up to full speed.
