I would like to overclock my r9 280, but whenever I try, I get multicolored checkered tiles on my screen flickering about a square inch each

the default core clock is 950 MHz,
the default memory clock is 1250MHz
motherboard: asus a88xm-a

Solution
Are you adjusting the core voltage as well?

That is a pretty low clocked 280. A lot I see start at 930MHz and most get to 1100-1200MHz clock speed with overclocking.

That is, however, a Powercolor and they tend to be one of the lower quality brands so you might be stuck with a lower overclock. Try going up on 50MHz increments and then when you get artifacting up the core voltage by a few mV then try again.

I didn't realize I had already slightly overclocked, My GPU has always to my knowledge been overclocked to 960 Mhz. This may be the highest I can overclock. Thank you for your help.
