Overclocking issues with I7 920

Hi,

I have a Core I7 920 2.67ghz on an Asus P6t SE. I just bought 24gb RAM (DDR3 - 1666) and a new graphics card (GTX 970) to be able to use very demanding color correction software.

I also had the store assemble the new hardware on my computer and asked them to OC the cpu to 3.6ghz so that I could use a higher clock speed. But they told me they had a very hard time overclocking the cpu and the best they could do was 3.3ghz and anything higher than that would get blue screens. I also got a blue screen today working on my color correction. Anyone knows what could be causing the OC issue? Maybe the RAM?

Thanks

Could be the RAM. Could be the chip just won't clock that high, there are no guaranteed overclocks. Could be the chip is old and is seeing some electromigration. Could be a low quality power supply.. The experience of the person doing the overclock. Could be lots of things.

With what you paid a shop to install new hardware you likely came close to what it would have cost to upgrade to something newer and not as obsolete.
