just picked up a msi 1060 oc1. wanting to overclock it properly I've watched some videos and read up on it but asking here seems much more reliable. so any tips would be appreciated. I've currently got it OC'd at 2158mz and it works fine with Val BM for an hour but that's as far as I'm going for now.

2158 MHz is an incredible overclock, good job!
My advice is to check the temperatures during gaming. I wouldn't feel safe if temps get anywhere above 75C. Also, set the fan speed at max if you haven't already ( this will create so much more noise but if you have headphones you probably can't hear it anyway). Also, to make sure the overclock is stable, you should run a stress test for 20 mins or more and see if it is stable or not(means no crashing or artifacts) . If it isn't, turn down that overclock a little

to be honest I don't trust the Val-bm information and my overclocking ability. I just tried it yesterday. The fans are at auto and gets to 68C. my case has 7 120mm fans
I also have a air conditioner not too far from it which is on so my room is quite cool. I also haven't touched the memory clock yet so let's hope it goes well for that. So what alternative programs can I use for accurate clock speeds? Or is Val-bm trust worthy? I'd like separate comparative Information to be sure. Also everything is at ultra max at 1080p because that's what my monitor is.

(update: Tested again I made a mistake the core clock was actually 2164MHZ crashed so I bumped it down to 2151MHZ and it seems to be working) I'm going to go 1:30-2hr on it to see if stable. do I set the fans at full or keep it at auto?

At auto, the fans will spin according to the temperature (probably at max with that oc anyway), so it will probably be the same if you put it at max. You can do it tho just to be safe that's what I would do.

MSI, Afterburner, GPU-Z all are reliable programs, so ye

the fans go from 60% to 80% on auto which is quiet enough but 100% its audible. Doesn't go above 68C I'm guessing its due to my case airflow which is good. 2 fans in 6 fans out. I'm using afterburner. got the memory up to over 4600 not sure which number exactly but it works fantastic now much better than I thought it would (not as good as my 980ti) but good. to bad they make them unable to sli due to them undercutting the 1070 & 1080. or I would get another.
